In this section Paul said that the things that cause us suffering are only small compared to the glory that God will give us in the future, renewed world. The created world waits for God to reveal us, his adopted children, in our new bodies, because he will also renew the created world at that time. We and the created world groan waiting for that renewal. Paul then described what hope is.
The Holy Spirit helps us where we are weak. He also helps us to pray and intercedes for us. God causes all things to work for our good. He chose us to become like Jesus in word and deed, and become like him like a brother is like his brother. He chose us before the creation of the world, called us, made us righteous, and has glorified us.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
We wait for God to give glory to us
Later we will be together with God in his glory
The Holy Spirit helps us today and God will glorify us in the future
And we know that
¶ And we(incl) know this:
God works all things together for the good of those who love Him,
all things work to benefit those who love God,
all of the things that happen to the people who love God bring good to them.
God works all things: There are several ways to interpret who or what is working here. Here are the two main ones:
It is all things that work here. (NRSV, ESV, NABRE, KJV, GW, NET)
It is God who works here. For example:
in all things God works (NIV) (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, CEV, NCV)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). But if the major language version follows interpretation (2), you may want to follow that.
for the good of those who love Him: Here the word for introduces who benefits from the good. For example:
…the good of those who love him (NIV)
for the good: This phrase indicates that all things that happen in a believer’s life, whether good or bad, ultimately result in benefit for him or her. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
to their good (NJB)
those who love Him: This phrase refers to all believers. Your translation should indicate or imply that meaning.
who are called according to His purpose.
and they are called according to his plan for them.
He chose/appointed those people, because he planned it that way.
who are called according to His purpose: Here the word who introduces who benefits from the good. This group is all believers, like “those who love Him” in 8:28b. To make it clear this is the same group as in 8:28b, some languages must introduce it differently. For example:
namely, those who are called according to his purpose
I refer to those who are called according to his purpose
those who love him, those who have been called in accordance with his purpose (NJB)
and he called them according to his purpose
are called: Here the word called means “chosen to be given a special benefit or purpose.” God designated people in Rome to believe in Jesus and become his people. His call was the means by which he chose them.
See how you translated this word in 1:6.
according to His purpose: The word purpose refers to what the goal or expected result is for God calling people to believe in Jesus. There are many aspects or parts to that purpose. Two parts of that purpose are in 8:30: to justify and to glorify believers. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
according to his plan (GW)
because that was his plan (NCV)
His purpose: The BSB and many English versions add the word His here, because it is God’s plan to call them.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
ἀγαθόν & πρόθεσιν
good & ˓his˒_purpose
If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of good and purpose, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [what is good … what he purposes]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
τοῖς κατὰ πρόθεσιν κλητοῖς οὖσιν
˱to˲_the_‹ones› ˱to˲_the_‹ones› (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἴδαμεν Δέ ὅτι τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν τόν Θεόν παντᾶ συνεργεῖ ὁ Θεός εἰς ἀγαθόν τοῖς κατά πρόθεσιν κλητοῖς οὖσιν)
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [for those whom God called according to his purpose]
