TSNTyndale Study Notes:

20:9-27 Because pagan worship affected ethics, the regulations for families follow immediately after those dealing with pagan religious practices. To some extent, the laws of this section replicate those of 18:6-30, which precede the section dealing with proper expressions of holiness (19:1-37). These were all related issues, as the proper worship of God led to proper conduct toward other people, while improper worship of God led to moral violations.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁכַּ֤ב אֶת־ זָכָר֙ מִשְׁכְּבֵ֣י אִשָּׁ֔ה

(Some words not found in UHB: and,man which/who lies_with DOM male lying woman/wife detestable_act they_had_acquired both_of=them to_die they_must_die blood,their in/on/at/with,them )

The expression beds of a woman uses the image of a bed to represent sexual activity. In particular, the entire expression refers to a man having sexual relations with another man in the same manner in which he would have sexual relations with a woman. If this expression would not be clear in your language, consider using a generic expression. Alternate translation: “And a man who lies with a man as he would with a woman”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

וְאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁכַּ֤ב אֶת־ זָכָר֙

(Some words not found in UHB: and,man which/who lies_with DOM male lying woman/wife detestable_act they_had_acquired both_of=them to_die they_must_die blood,their in/on/at/with,them )

See how you handled this euphemism in 20:11.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

תּוֹעֵבָ֥ה עָשׂ֖וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֑ם

detestable_act they_had_acquired (Some words not found in UHB: and,man which/who lies_with DOM male lying woman/wife detestable_act they_had_acquired both_of=them to_die they_must_die blood,their in/on/at/with,them )

Here, the abstract noun abomination refers to a violation of the way that Yahweh intended his creation to be ordered. If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of abomination, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “What both of them have done does not respect the way that God intends his creation to be ordered”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication

מ֥וֹת יוּמָ֖תוּ

to_die they_must_die

See how you handled the similar expression in 20:2.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

דְּמֵיהֶ֥ם בָּֽם׃

(Some words not found in UHB: and,man which/who lies_with DOM male lying woman/wife detestable_act they_had_acquired both_of=them to_die they_must_die blood,their in/on/at/with,them )

See how you handled the similar expression in 20:9.
