Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

In this section, Paul started by saying that God has made people right with him because they believed in Jesus. From that, believers have peace with God and his grace. Believers rejoice about the future blessings as well as sufferings here on earth. Suffering causes us to endure, do what is right, and have hope for a better future.
God showed how much he loves us by sending Christ to die for us when we were still rejecting him. Jesus also saves us from God’s anger and reconciled us to God, and so we can rejoice.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
Results of Justification (NRSV)
Peace with God Through Faith (ESV)
Some things we experience because we believe in Jesus
Not only that, but we also rejoice in God
And not only that, we boast/exult in God
But that is not all. We rejoice in who God is
Not only that, but…also: The Greek is literally “and not only but also.” Here it indicates that Paul wanted to talk more about the things that he had already talked about. For example:
More than that…also (ESV)
Not only is this so, but…also (NIV)
But that’s not the only-thing that we expectKankanaey Back Translation on TW.
See how you translated this phrase in 5:3.
we also rejoice in God: The Greek word that the BSB translates as rejoice refers to speaking proudly about God. Some examples are: “God is great,” “He loves all people,” “He is all-powerful,” and “He sent his Son to die for our sins.” Here are other ways to translate this clause:
we also exult in God (NASB)
we also boast in God’s greatness
we praise God before others
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
by the things/deeds that our Lord Jesus Christ has done,
because of what our Leader/Master Jesus Christ has done for us,
through our Lord Jesus Christ: The word through indicates here that we can rejoice in God because of what Jesus did (and is doing) for us.
through whom we have now received reconciliation.
by whom at this time we have been reconciled to God.
now that he caused us to be at peace with God.
through whom we have now received reconciliation: This refers to Jesus reconciling us to God, as in 5:10. In some languages “receive” and “take” are translated by the same word. If that is true in your language, you should probably avoid translating “receive/take” literally here. Also some languages must translate reconciliation as a verb. For example:
who has reconciled us to God
This clause tells the reader more about Jesus. It does not separate Jesus from other Jesuses. For the correct meaning in some languages, translators must avoid the word whom. For example:
Through him we have now received reconciliation.
He has now reconciled us to God.
we have now received reconciliation: The word now indicates that being reconciled with God is still true at the present time. It has the same meaning here as in 5:9. For example:
now that we have received reconciliation
Now that he has reconciled us to God.
reconciliation: This word refers to causing two people or two groups of people, who have been enemies, to be at peace with one another. Jesus, by his death and resurrection, has made a way for God to be reconciled to people who believe in Jesus as Savior. Some languages use a phrase for this meaning. For example:
he made peace
he brought back us to be God’s friends

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns
οὐ μόνον δέ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί καυχώμενοι ἐν τῷ Θεῷ διά τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ διʼ οὗ νῦν τήν καταλλαγήν ἐλάβομεν)
The pronoun this could refer to: (1) what Paul said in the previous verse. Alternate translation: [Not only are we saved by his life, but] (2) what Paul said in [5:2–10](../05/02.md). Alternate translation: [Not only are all these things true, but]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
καὶ καυχώμενοι ἐν τῷ Θεῷ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί καυχώμενοι ἐν τῷ Θεῷ διά τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ διʼ οὗ νῦν τήν καταλλαγήν ἐλάβομεν)
Paul speaks of these people as if they were boasting inside of God. Paul means that these believers in Christ boast about how great God is. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [we also are boasting about how great God is] or [we also are boasting because of God]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
διὰ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί καυχώμενοι ἐν τῷ Θεῷ διά τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ διʼ οὗ νῦν τήν καταλλαγήν ἐλάβομεν)
Here, through indicates that our Lord Jesus Christ is the means by which believers can boast. This refers to what Jesus did for believers in order for them to be able to boast. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [through what our Lord Jesus Christ did for us]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
δι’ οὗ νῦν τὴν καταλλαγὴν ἐλάβομεν
through whom now (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί καυχώμενοι ἐν τῷ Θεῷ διά τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ διʼ οὗ νῦν τήν καταλλαγήν ἐλάβομεν)
Here, through indicates that Jesus is the means by which believers have received the reconciliation. This refers to what Jesus did for believers in order for them to have peace with God, as briefly mentioned in [4:25](../04/25.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [through what he did for us that caused us to receive the reconciliation]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
νῦν τὴν καταλλαγὴν ἐλάβομεν
now (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί καυχώμενοι ἐν τῷ Θεῷ διά τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ διʼ οὗ νῦν τήν καταλλαγήν ἐλάβομεν)
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of reconciliation, you could express the same idea with a verbal form. Alternate translation: [we have now been reconciled with God]
