(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί προσκαλεσάμενοι τούς ἀποστόλους δείραντες παρήγγειλαν μή λαλεῖν ἐπί τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καί ἀπέλυσαν)

Luke uses the word translated And to introduce what the Sanhedrin did as a result of Gamaliel’s advice. Alternate translation: [So]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

προσκαλεσάμενοι τοὺς ἀποστόλους, δείραντες παρήγγειλαν

˓having˒_called_to (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί προσκαλεσάμενοι τούς ἀποστόλους δείραντες παρήγγειλαν μή λαλεῖν ἐπί τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καί ἀπέλυσαν)

The Sanhedrin would have ordered their officers to bring back the apostles and beat them. They did not do those things personally. But Luke speaks as if they did do those things because they ordered them to be done. Alternate translation: [they had their officers bring back the apostles and beat them, and then they commanded them]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

λαλεῖν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ

˓to_be˒_speaking (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί προσκαλεσάμενοι τούς ἀποστόλους δείραντες παρήγγειλαν μή λαλεῖν ἐπί τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καί ἀπέλυσαν)

The Sanhedrin members are using the term name to mean the person of Jesus. See how you translated the similar expression in [4:17](../04/17.md). Alternate translation: [to speak about Jesus]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:17-40 The success of the apostles’ ministry again aroused strong opposition (cp. 4:1-3). The wealthy and powerful Sadducees controlled the Temple establishment and had a Temple police force at their disposal. They opposed belief in the resurrection and were determined not to allow the apostles to proclaim their message about the resurrection of Jesus unchallenged. They also sensed that their hold on the Jewish people was loosening, so, filled with jealousy, they attacked the apostles.
