OET (OET-LV)After this, Youdas/(Yəhūdāh) the Galilaios rose_up in the days of_the registration, and drew_away people after him, and_that one perished, and all as_many_as were_being_persuaded by_him were_scattered.

OET (OET-RV) A bit later on, a Galilean man named Yudas became prominent at the time of the census and he attracted people to him. But he also died, and all those who’d been persuaded by him ended up being scattered.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

μετὰ τοῦτον

after this

Gamaliel is using the demonstrative adjective this as a noun to refer to a specific person, Theudas. (ULT shows that by adding one.) Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could use a pronoun or this man’s name. Alternate translation: “After him” or “After Theudas”

Note 2 topic: translate-names

Ἰούδας ὁ Γαλιλαῖος

Judas the Galilean

The word Judas is the name of a man. See how you translated the same name in 1:13 and 1:16. (Those verses describe two other men with this name, not the same Judas as here.) Galilean is the name for someone who is from the region of Galilee. See how you translated that name in 1:11.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἀνέστη

rose_up

As in 5:36, rose up here means that Judas rebelled against the Roman government. Alternate translation: “rebelled”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῆς ἀπογραφῆς

in the days ˱of˲_the registration

Gamaliel is using the term days to refer to a specific time. Alternate translation: “at the time of the census”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἀπέστησε λαὸν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: μετὰ τοῦτον ἀνέστη Ἰούδας ὁ Γαλιλαῖος ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῆς ἀπογραφῆς καὶ ἀπέστησεν λαὸν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ κἀκεῖνος ἀπώλετο καὶ πάντες ὅσοι ἐπείθοντο αὐτῷ διεσκορπίσθησαν)

Here, drew away is an idiom that means Judas persuaded people to rebel with him against the Roman government. Alternate translation: “persuaded people to join him in rebellion”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

κἀκεῖνος

and_that_‹one›

Gamaliel is using the demonstrative adjective that as a noun to refer to a specific person, Judas. (ULT shows that by adding one.) Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you use a pronoun or this man’s name. Alternate translation: “He also” or “Judas also”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὅσοι ἐπείθοντο αὐτῷ

as_many_as /were_being/_persuaded ˱by˲_him

If your language would not use the passive form were persuaded, you could state this with an active form. Alternate translation: “as many as he had persuaded”

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

διεσκορπίσθησαν

/were/_scattered

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this with an active form. Alternate translation: “scattered”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:17-40 The success of the apostles’ ministry again aroused strong opposition (cp. 4:1-3). The wealthy and powerful Sadducees controlled the Temple establishment and had a Temple police force at their disposal. They opposed belief in the resurrection and were determined not to allow the apostles to proclaim their message about the resurrection of Jesus unchallenged. They also sensed that their hold on the Jewish people was loosening, so, filled with jealousy, they attacked the apostles.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
