OET (OET-LV)envies, drunkennesses, carousings, and the similar things to_these, which I_am_previously_saying to_you_all, as I_previously_said, that the ones the such things doing, will_ not _be_inheriting the_kingdom of_god.

OET (OET-RV) envy, drunkenness, carousing, and other similar things which I’ve mentioned previously. And as I also said previously, the people that do these things won’t be inheriting God’s kingdom.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

φθόνοι, μέθαι, κῶμοι

envies drunkennesses carousings

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of envy, drunkenness, and drunken celebrations, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: “being envious, being drunk, being drunk while celebrating”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

οὐ κληρονομήσουσιν

not /will_be/_inheriting

Here Paul speaks of the kingdom of God as if it were property that a child could inherit from a parent when that parent dies. Paul uses the word inherit here to refer to being able to dwell in the kingdom of God. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this figure of speech with a comparable metaphor or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: “will not dwell in”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:21 Drunkenness has no place in the Christian life (see Luke 21:34; 1 Cor 11:20-22; Eph 5:18).
• wild parties: Festivals in honor of pagan gods were often accompanied by drunken orgies (cp. 1 Pet 4:3).
• other sins like these: This list is only representative of the vices of the sinful nature (cp. Mark 7:20-23; Rom 1:29-31; 1 Cor 6:9-10; Eph 5:3-5; Col 3:5-8; 1 Tim 1:9-10; 2 Tim 3:2-5; Jas 3:13-18; Rev 21:8). People living that sort of life are not living by the Spirit, and thereby demonstrate no relationship with God by faith. Such people will not inherit the Kingdom of God: They are still slaves of their sinful nature (Gal 4:8-9, 22-25; cp. Rom 6:16-22; 1 Cor 6:9-10) and are not under God’s rule.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
