Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

21:8 This vice list summarizes sins described throughout Revelation. These sins characterize people who have not experienced adoption by God; their fate is the fiery lake (see Rom 1:29-32; Gal 5:19-21; 2 Tim 3:2-5; cp. Exod 20:13-17; see also study note on Rev 20:10).
• all liars: John apparently viewed deception as the root of sin; elsewhere he describes Satan as the “father of lies” (John 8:44; 1 Jn 2:4; see Rev 14:5; 21:27; 22:15; cp. Matt 12:34).
In this section, John saw a new heaven, a new earth, and a new Jerusalem. John also heard someone explain that God now lives with his people. The person also spoke about those who did not follow God.
Other examples of headings for this section are:
The new heaven and earth descended, and God began living with his people
All things made new (JBP)
But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable
But cowards, those without faith, people who do detestable things,
But those who are afraid to follow Jesus, those who refuse to believe in me, those who do terrible/abhorrent things,
the cowardly: This phrase usually refers to people who are afraid to do things. For example:
cowards (NLT)
Here it refers to people who are afraid to obey God. They are afraid of persecution and so they do not follow Jesus.
In some languages a literal translation would not imply the correct meaning here. If that is true in your language, you may want to:
Explain the meaning in your translation. For example:
those afraid of persecution
Translate the literal meaning and explain its meaning in a footnote. An example footnote is:
Here “the cowardly” probably refers to people who are afraid of persecution. So they do not follow Jesus.
unbelieving: This phrase refers to people who choose not to believe in Jesus. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
unbelievers (NLT)
the faithless (RSV)
abominable: This phrase refers to people who do disgusting and detestable things. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
the obscene (REB)
detestable people (GW)
and murderers and sexually immoral
murderers, adulterers/fornicators,
those who murder others, those who commit/do sexual immorality,
murderers: This phrase refers to people who kill others deliberately and unlawfully. See how you translated the noun “murder” in 9:21 for a similar idea. But note that the word here refers to the people who commit these murders.
sexually immoral: This phrase refers to people who have sexual relations with anyone who is not their spouse. The word refers to both men and women. Use a word or phrase that refers to all kinds of sexual sin. For example:
adulterers/fornicators
those who sin sexually
and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars,
sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars
those who do witchcraft/sorcery, those who worship idols, and all those who lie
sorcerers: This phrase refers to people who do sorcery. The word refers to any method to get something by supernatural means. This could include using spells, magic potions, and contacting evil spirits. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
those who practice magic arts (NIV)
those who practice/do sorcery or magic
See how you translated a similar phrase in 9:21 (“sorcery”).
idolaters: This phrase refers to people who consider certain images or statues to be gods or represent gods. They worship and pray to them. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
those who worship idols (GNT)
worshippers of false gods (NJB)
their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur.
will have a place in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur,
will go to the lake where fire and sulfur burns and remain there.
their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur: This clause indicates that the sinners will go to this evil place and remain there. This will be their home. They will not be able to leave. Other ways to translate this clause are:
the place for them is the lake burning with fire and sulfur (GNT)
their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur (NLT)
the lake that burns with fire and sulfur: The Greek phrase is literally “the lake burning with fire and sulfur.” The phrase here has the same meaning as the phrase “the fiery lake of burning sulfur” in 19:20e. The phrase “the lake of fire and sulfur” in 20:10a has the same meaning also. For example:
the lake that burns with fire and sulfur (NRSV)
This is the second death.”
which is the second death.”
Being in that lake is the second time that someone dies.”
This: This word refers to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. Other ways to translate this word are:
That place
which (GNT)
the second death: The first death is when a person dies on earth and his body dies. The phrase the second death refers to being thrown into the lake of fire (20:14–15). Other ways to translate this clause are:
called the second death
the second time of dying
See how you translated this phrase in 20:6 or 20:14.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj
τοῖς δὲ δειλοῖς, καὶ ἀπίστοις

John is using the adjectives cowardly and unbelieving as nouns to mean certain kinds of people. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could translate these words with equivalent phrases. Alternate translation: [for cowardly people and unbelieving people]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
ἐβδελυγμένοις
˓having_been˒_detested
If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [those who do things that make God abhor them]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys
πυρὶ καὶ θείῳ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τοῖς Δέ δειλοῖς καί ἀπίστοις καί ἐβδελυγμένοις καί φονεῦσι καί πόρνοις καί φαρμάκοις καί εἰδωλολάτραις καί πᾶσι τοῖς ψευδέσιν τό μέρος αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ λίμνῃ τῇ καιομένῃ πυρί καί θείῳ ὅ ἐστίν ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος)
This phrase expresses a single idea by using two words connected with and. The word fire describes the state of the sulfur. If it would be more natural in your language, you could express this meaning with an equivalent phrase that does not use “and.” Alternate translation: [with fiery sulfur]
Note 4 topic: translate-ordinal
ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος.
the death ¬the second
If your language does not use ordinal numbers, you could use a cardinal number here or an equivalent expression. Alternate translation: [death number two]
