OET (OET-LV)Be_being_persuaded by_the ones leading of_you_all, and be_yielding, because/for they are_watching for the souls of_you_all, as an_account going_to_give_back, in_order_that with joy this they_may_be_doing, and not groaning, because/for unprofitable for_you_all this would_be.

OET (OET-RV)Your leaders keep watch over your spiritual lives, knowing that they will have to give account to God for you, so obey them and yield to them so that they can fulfil their ministry cheerfully and without groaning, because that wouldn’t help you all either.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

πείθεσθε τοῖς ἡγουμένοις ὑμῶν, καὶ ὑπείκετε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Πείθεσθε τοῖς ἡγουμένοις ὑμῶν καί ὑπείκετε αὐτοί γάρ ἀγρυπνοῦσιν ὑπέρ τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν ὡς λόγον ἀποδώσοντες ἵνα μετά χαρᾶς τοῦτο ποιῶσιν καί μή στενάζοντες ἀλυσιτελές γάρ ὑμῖν τοῦτο)

The words Obey and submit function together to exhort the audience to follow their leaders completely. It is possible that Obey refers to trust that leads to obedience, while submit refers to respecting and obeying a person even if you disagree with him or her. If you do not have two words for these ideas, you could use a single word or phrase that exhorts people to respectfully follow and obey leaders. Alternate translation: [Obediently submit to your leaders] or [Follow your leaders no matter what]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἀγρυπνοῦσιν ὑπὲρ τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν

˓are˒_watching (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Πείθεσθε τοῖς ἡγουμένοις ὑμῶν καί ὑπείκετε αὐτοί γάρ ἀγρυπνοῦσιν ὑπέρ τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν ὡς λόγον ἀποδώσοντες ἵνα μετά χαρᾶς τοῦτο ποιῶσιν καί μή στενάζοντες ἀλυσιτελές γάρ ὑμῖν τοῦτο)

The author speaks of how the leaders watch over the audience as if they stayed up at night guarding their souls. He speaks in this way to indicate how much time and energy the leaders spend as they take care of and protect the audience. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [guard your lives] or [diligently take care of you]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

ὡς

as

The word as introduces what the leaders know about themselves. They know that they will give account for what they do, and that is why they keep watch. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a person’s motivation for doing something. Alternate translation: [knowing that they are] or [with the recognition that they are]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

λόγον ἀποδώσοντες

˓an˒_account ˓going_to˒_give_back

The implication is that these leaders will give account to God for what they have done. This means that God will hold them responsible for what they have done. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a form that refers to how God holds people responsible for what they do. Alternate translation: [ones whom God will hold accountable] or [ones who will answer to God for what they have done]

ἵνα

in_order_that

The phrase in order that introduces the purpose for which the audience should Obey and submit to their leaders. If it would be helpful in your language, you could clarify what in order that relates to. Alternate translation: [so you should obey them in order that]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

μετὰ χαρᾶς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Πείθεσθε τοῖς ἡγουμένοις ὑμῶν καί ὑπείκετε αὐτοί γάρ ἀγρυπνοῦσιν ὑπέρ τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν ὡς λόγον ἀποδώσοντες ἵνα μετά χαρᾶς τοῦτο ποιῶσιν καί μή στενάζοντες ἀλυσιτελές γάρ ὑμῖν τοῦτο)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of joy, you could express the idea by using an adverb such as “joyfully” or “gladly.” Alternate translation: [gladly] or [cheerfully]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

μὴ στενάζοντες

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Πείθεσθε τοῖς ἡγουμένοις ὑμῶν καί ὑπείκετε αὐτοί γάρ ἀγρυπνοῦσιν ὑπέρ τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν ὡς λόγον ἀποδώσοντες ἵνα μετά χαρᾶς τοῦτο ποιῶσιν καί μή στενάζοντες ἀλυσιτελές γάρ ὑμῖν τοῦτο)

The word groaning refers to an emotion that leads to groaning, particularly sadness or exhaustion. If it would be helpful in your language, you could refer to the emotion directly instead of its result. Alternate translation: [not with grief] or [without mourning]

Note 7 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Πείθεσθε τοῖς ἡγουμένοις ὑμῶν καί ὑπείκετε αὐτοί γάρ ἀγρυπνοῦσιν ὑπέρ τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν ὡς λόγον ἀποδώσοντες ἵνα μετά χαρᾶς τοῦτο ποιῶσιν καί μή στενάζοντες ἀλυσιτελές γάρ ὑμῖν τοῦτο)

The word for introduces a reason why the audience should try to keep their leaders from groaning. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this relationship clearer. Alternate translation: [because] or [so you should obey them because]

Note 8 topic: writing-pronouns

τοῦτο

this

The word this refers to how the leaders might keep watch with groaning. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make what this refers to more explicit. Alternate translation: [were they to keep watch over you with groaning, that] or [them leading you with groaning]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

13:17 The relationship between the spiritual leaders and the members of the church may have been strained, so the author exhorts the members to obey them and do what they say.
• The Greek word translated obey can also mean follow, place confidence in, or be persuaded by.
• Christian leaders watch over people’s souls (Acts 20:28-31; 1 Pet 5:1-4), a role that carries grave responsibility, making them accountable to God (Jas 3:1).
• The word sorrow could be translated groaning; it speaks of emotional burden and stress. Having leaders who are stressed and burdened because of an unruly church does not benefit the church.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
