OET (OET-LV) If/because six_of months he_remained there Yōʼāⱱ and_all Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) until he_had_cut_off every_of male in_ʼEdōm.
OET (OET-RV) (Yoav and the Israeli warriors had had to stay there for six months to kill the Edomite males.)
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases
כִּ֣י
(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when six_of months stayed there Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and=all Yisrael until cut_off all/each/any/every male in,Edom )
Here the word For introduces not a reason but a further explanation. Alternate translation: [Specifically]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל
and=all (Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when six_of months stayed there Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and=all Yisrael until cut_off all/each/any/every male in,Edom )
See the discussion of this phrase in the introduction to 1 Kings of how the author and characters often use the name of a nation, tribe, or city to represent its people. Here the author is using the name Israel to represent the army of that nation. Alternate translation: [and the entire Israelite army]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
הִכְרִ֥ית
cut_off
The author is speaking as if Joab had actually cut off the Edomite males, as if they had been plants that he and his soldiers had removed from the ground with a sharp tool. He means that Joab and his soldiers killed them. See how you translated the similar expression in [9:7](../09/07.md). Alternate translation: [he and his soldiers had killed]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole
כָּל־זָכָ֖ר בֶּאֱדֽוֹם
(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when six_of months stayed there Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and=all Yisrael until cut_off all/each/any/every male in,Edom )
The author says every male in Edom as an extreme statement for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different way to express the emphasis. Alternate translation: [every Edomite male they could capture]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
