The author is speaking as if Joab had actually cut off the Edomite males, as if they had been plants that he and his soldiers had removed from the ground with a sharp tool. He means that Joab and his soldiers killed them. See how you translated the similar expression in [9:7](../09/07.md). Alternate translation: [he and his soldiers had killed]
