OET (OET-LV) For_so/thus/hence see_I gather_of_you to fathers_of_your and_gathered to grave_of_your in/on/at/with_peace and_not eyes_of_your they_will_look in/on/at/with_all_of the_disaster which I will_bring on the_place the_this and_brought_back DOM the_king message.
OET (OET-RV) Because of that, he’ll allow you to die and be buried peacefully, and you yourself won’t witness the destruction that will come to this place.”
¶ So they relayed those messages back to King Yoshiyyah.
This is the end of the message from Yahweh to King Josiah through the prophetess Huldah.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
(Occurrence 0) See, I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace
(Some words not found in UHB: for=so/thus/hence behold,I gather_of,you on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in fathers_of,your and,gathered to/towards grave_of,your in/on/at/with,peace and=not see eyes_of,your in/on/at/with,all_of the,disaster which/who I bring on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,place the=this and,brought_back DOM the=king message )
Both statements mean basically the same thing. They are polite ways of saying he will die. Alternate translation: “So I will allow you to die and be buried peacefully” (See also: figs-euphemism)
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
(Occurrence 0) Your eyes will not see
(Some words not found in UHB: for=so/thus/hence behold,I gather_of,you on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in fathers_of,your and,gathered to/towards grave_of,your in/on/at/with,peace and=not see eyes_of,your in/on/at/with,all_of the,disaster which/who I bring on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,place the=this and,brought_back DOM the=king message )
Here “will not see” represents not experiencing something. Alternate translation: “You will not experience”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche
(Occurrence 0) Your eyes
(Some words not found in UHB: for=so/thus/hence behold,I gather_of,you on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in fathers_of,your and,gathered to/towards grave_of,your in/on/at/with,peace and=not see eyes_of,your in/on/at/with,all_of the,disaster which/who I bring on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,place the=this and,brought_back DOM the=king message )
Here “eyes” represents the whole person.
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
(Occurrence 0) the disaster that I will bring upon this place
(Some words not found in UHB: for=so/thus/hence behold,I gather_of,you on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in fathers_of,your and,gathered to/towards grave_of,your in/on/at/with,peace and=not see eyes_of,your in/on/at/with,all_of the,disaster which/who I bring on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,place the=this and,brought_back DOM the=king message )
Yahweh causing terrible things to happen is spoken of as if disaster were an object that Yahweh would bring to a place. Alternate translation: “the terrible things I will cause to happen in this place”
22:18-20 God commended Josiah’s sorrow and humility in response to the reading of God’s word. Although God’s judgment was certain, he would withhold it until after Josiah’s death.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
