OET (OET-LV)And the twenty four elders which before of_ the _god were_sitting on the thrones of_them, fell on the faces of_them, and they_prostrated the before_god

OET (OET-RV)The twenty-four elders sitting on their thrones in front of God knelt down with their faces to the ground and worshipped God,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:15–19: The angel blew the seventh trumpet

In this section, the seventh angel blew his trumpet. Then voices in heaven announced that God and Jesus now rule over the whole world. The voices also announced that God would soon judge all people. He would reward believers but punish those destroying the earth. John also saw God’s temple in heaven opened and the ark of the covenant inside it.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The seventh angel and his trumpet

The seventh trumpet sounded/blew

11:16a

And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God

elders: Here the word elders refers to those who have authority. These elders are the same ones as in 4:4. These twenty-four people (or angels) were leaders. They had God as their leader. For example:

leaders (GW)

These verses do not say whether the elders were people or angels. So use a word like “elder” or “leader” that could refer to either people or angels. See how you translated this word in 4:4 or 7:11.

thrones: A throne usually refers to the official chair of a king. Here the word thrones refers to special chairs for the elders. These thrones show that the elders have authority or a special place before God.

See how you translated this word in 1:4 or 4:4.

11:16b

fell on their faces and worshiped God,

fell on their faces: Here this phrase refers to kneeling and putting faces to the ground with arms outstretched toward God. This position showed complete humility before God and honored him. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

prostrated themselves and touched the ground with their foreheads (NJB)

threw themselves down with their faces to the ground (NET)

Many languages have a different way to show complete humility and honor to God. If that is true in your language, you may want to use that saying instead. See how you translated this phrase in 7:11, where the BSB translates it as “fell facedown.”

worshiped: This word refers to honoring someone or something as sacred/divine. Other ways to translate this word are:

venerated

revered

See how you translated this phrase in 4:10 or 9:20.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ

before ¬the ˱of˲_God

Here the word before means “in front of” or “in the presence of” another person. Alternate translation: [in the presence of God]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἔπεσαν ἐπὶ τὰ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν

fell (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί οἱ εἴκοσι τέσσαρες πρεσβύτεροι οἱ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ κάθηνται ἐπί τούς θρόνους αὐτῶν ἔπεσαν ἐπί τά πρόσωπα αὐτῶν καί προσεκύνησαν τῷ Θεῷ)

This expression means that the elders lay down facing the ground. See how you translated the similar expression in [7:11](../07/11.md). Alternate translation: [bowed down to the ground]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:15-19 The seventh trumpet (“the third terror,” 11:14; see also 9:12) presents a scene of final judgment and the eternal Kingdom. As in 7:9-17, this scene provides a dramatic window into the ultimate Christian hope with God. In the midst of a picture of judgment, the reader is reminded of eternity with God.
