OET (OET-LV)And when saw the dragon that he_was_thrown on the earth, he_persecuted the woman, who bore the male child.

OET (OET-RV)When the dinosaur realised that God had thrown him down to the earth, he tried to attack the woman who had given birth to the son.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 12:1–17: The woman fled from the dragon

In this section, John saw several signs or symbols representing spiritual reality. The first sign was a woman, representing the people of God. The second sign was a dragon, representing Satan. The woman was about to give birth, and the dragon wanted to kill the child. The child is symbolic of Jesus as the Christ. God took the son to heaven and protected the woman.

In 12:7–12, John interrupted the story of the woman and the dragon to tell about the war between the dragon and the angels. These verses help explain why the dragon wanted to kill the woman. In 12:13, John continued the story of the woman and the dragon.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The sign of the dragon chasing the woman

The vision of the woman and the dragon

The spiritual conflict of God’s people and Satan

12:13a

And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown to the earth,

saw that: Here the word saw means “realized” (as in the GNT). For example:

found himself (NJB)

he had been thrown: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

Michael and his angels had thrown him

This clause refers to an event that had happened earlier (12:9). Indicate that this event has already happened.

12:13b

he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.

pursued: There are two ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as pursued:

  1. The word means chased here. For example:

hunted for (NCV) (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NABRE, NLT, NET, REB, NCV, ESV)

  2. The word means persecuted here. For example:

persecuted (NASB) (NASB, GW, CEV, KJV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1).Aune (page 704), Swete (page 157), Lenski (page 381), and Kistemaker (page 367) support interpretation (1). But Beale (page 668, Osbourne (page 482), and Smalley (page 330) say it has both meanings here. The dragon chased the woman in order to harm her.

the woman who had given birth to the male child: This phrase refers to the woman of 12:1–6. For example:

the woman, the mother of the male child (NJB)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐβλήθη

˱he˲_˓was˒_cast

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, the context suggests that it was God. Alternate translation: [God had thrown him down]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

τὸν ἄρσενα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὅτε εἶδεν ὁ δράκων ὅτι ἐβλήθη εἰς τήν γῆν ἐδίωξεν τήν γυναῖκα ἥτις ἔτεκεν τόν ἄρσενα)

John is using the adjective male as a noun to mean a certain kind of person. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could translate this word with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: [the male child]
