OET (OET-LV)These with the lamb will_be_warring, and the lamb will_be_overcoming them, because master of_masters he_is and king of_kings, and the ones with him, called, and chosen, and faithful.

OET (OET-RV)They’ll go to battle against the lamb, but the lamb will conquer them because he is master of masters and king of kings and the ones with him are called and chosen and faithful.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 17:1–18: John saw the woman Babylon and the beast

In this section, John saw a woman sitting on a red beast. The woman had the symbolic name “Babylon.” An angel referred to her as a prostitute. The red beast had seven heads and ten horns. The beast worked together with her, but later he destroyed her.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The great/famous prostitute with the symbolic name Babylon was destroyed

The red beast turned against the woman Babylon and destroyed her

17:14a

They will make war against the Lamb,

They: This pronoun probably refers to the ten future kings.

make war: This phrase refers to fighting by organized groups. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

fight a war

battle

the Lamb: This is a title for Jesus. Jewish people killed a lamb at the Passover as a sacrifice to God. The lamb has symbolic meaning as a special sacrifice and is a symbol for the Christ. See how you translated this title in 5:6 or 15:3.

17:14b

and the Lamb will triumph over them,

triumph over: Here the word triumph over refers to the Lamb defeating the kings in that war. For example:

conquer (RSV)

17:14c

because He is Lord of lords and King of kings;

He is Lord of lords and King of kings: These two phrases say almost the same thing. When a similar meaning is repeated, the repetition emphasizes that meaning. In some languages repeating a similar meaning has a different use. If that is true in your language, emphasize the meaning in a natural way. For example:

he is indeed the Lord over all rulers

he is Lord and King/Ruler over each and every leader

Lord of lords: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Lord means “the one in authority over (others),” or “owner.” The phrase Lord of lords indicates that Jesus has authority over all lords (and everyone else). See how you translated the word Lord in 4:8 or 16:7.

King of kings: Similarly, the phrase King of kings indicates that Jesus has authority over all kings (and everyone else). Other ways to translate this phrase are:

Leader over all leaders

Ruler of all rulers

17:14d

and He will be accompanied by His called and chosen and faithful ones.”

He will be accompanied by His called and chosen and faithful ones: The Greek words are literally “those with him are called and chosen and faithful” (as in the RSV). The words refer to believers. Other ways to translate these words are:

those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful (NASB)

Those who are called, chosen, and faithful are with him (GW)

those accompanying the Lamb are the called, chosen, and faithful (NET)

He will be accompanied by: These verses do not say how or where the followers are with the Lamb. They either fight alongside him or only accompany him as he fights.

In some languages it is necessary or more natural to indicate how the followers are with the Lamb. If that is true in your language, translate this phrase so that it allows for both possibilities. For example:

accompanying him

going with him in victory

His called: The word called refers to someone being invited to participate in something. Jesus has asked every believer to follow him. In some languages it is necessary or more natural to translate this phrase using an active verb. For example:

those whom he invited to follow him

chosen: Jesus chooses each believer to follow him.

faithful: This word refers to people who continue to follow Jesus. Other ways to translate this word are:

remain believing/believers

continue following

General Comment on 17:14b–d

In some languages it is more natural to separate or reorder the information in 17:14b–d to make it clearer. For example:

but the Lamb, 14dbringing his called, chosen, and faithful followers, 14bwill defeat them, 14cbecause he is Lord of lords and King of kings.

but the Lamb 14cis Lord of lords and King of kings, and so 14bwill defeat them.14dGoing with him will be his called, chosen, and faithful followers.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ, κλητοὶ, καὶ ἐκλεκτοὶ, καὶ πιστοί

the_‹ones› with him (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὗτοι μετά τοῦ Ἀρνίου πολεμήσουσιν καί τό Ἀρνίον νικήσει αὐτούς ὅτι Κύριος κυρίων ἐστίν καί Βασιλεύς βασιλέων καί οἱ μετʼ αὐτοῦ κλητοί καί ἐκλεκτοί καί πιστοί)

The words called and chosen are not passive verbal forms, they are adjectives. However, if your language does not use passive forms, it might be clearer for your readers to use expressions that do not seem to be passive verbal forms. Alternate translation: [God has called and chosen the ones with him and they are faithful]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

17:14 Whatever power they amass, the beast and ten kings (17:11-12) have no hope of winning because Jesus is Lord of all lords (see 19:11-16). Those God has called and chosen and who remain faithful to him will stand with him as victors.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
