OET (OET-LV)And I_saw the woman being_drunk with the blood of_the holy ones, and with the blood of_the witnesses of_Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa).
And I_marvelled, having_seen her wonder great.

OET (OET-RV)I noticed that the woman was drunk from the blood of the believers and from the blood of the witnesses of Yeshua. and, having seen her, I wondered a great wonder.
¶ When I saw her, I was incredibly amazed

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 17:1–18: John saw the woman Babylon and the beast

In this section, John saw a woman sitting on a red beast. The woman had the symbolic name “Babylon.” An angel referred to her as a prostitute. The red beast had seven heads and ten horns. The beast worked together with her, but later he destroyed her.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The great/famous prostitute with the symbolic name Babylon was destroyed

The red beast turned against the woman Babylon and destroyed her

17:6a–b

the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints and witnesses for Jesus: This clause indicates that the woman drank the blood of the saints and witnesses for Jesus, which, in this symbolism, caused her to be drunk, that is, intoxicated as if drinking much wine.

17:6a

I could see that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints

the blood of the saints: This phrase is an idiom that indicates that someone murdered the saints. The image of the first beast (13:15) or the woman caused their deaths. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

the blood from the dead bodies of the saints

the deaths of the saints

The word blood is used in the same way as in 17:6a.

saints: The Greek word that the BSB translates as saints means “holy ones.” The word refers to all believers. For example:

God’s people (GNT)

See how you translated this word in 5:8 or 16:6.

17:6b

and witnesses for Jesus.

and witnesses for Jesus: The Greek text begins here with a conjunction that the BSB translates as and. The English versions interpret this conjunction in two ways:

  1. The conjunction means even, so 17:6b describes “the blood of the saints” in 17:6a. For example, the NLT says:

with the blood of God’s holy people who were witnesses for Jesus (NIV, NLT, CEV, ESV)

  2. The conjunction means and, so two groups are referred to here. For example, the NASB says:

and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus (BSB, RSV, GNT, NJB, NASB, GW, NET, NABRE, REB, NCV, KJV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the expressions in both 17:6a and 17:6b probably refer to believers who would not renounce Jesus.Smalley (432) “‘witnesses to Jesus’…do not form a separate group from the…‘saints’.” But if the major language version follows interpretation (2), you may want to follow that.

Some other ways to translate this word are:

namely, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus

that is to say, those who testify about Jesus

witnesses for Jesus: There are two ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as witnesses for Jesus:

  1. The word refers to those who publicly spoke about Jesus and called him their Lord. For example:

    the witnesses to Jesus (NRSV)

those who testify about Jesus (GW) (BSB, NIV, NRSV, NASB, NABRE, NLT, GW, NET, REB)

  2. The word refers to those who were faithful to Jesus. For example:

those who were killed because of their faith in Jesus (NCV) (RSV, GNT, NJB, CEV, NCV, ESV, KJV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1) because of similar use of the word in 1:2b, 1:9e, 6:9c, and 12:11b.Beale (page 860) and Aune (page 937) have “witnesses to Jesus.” Smalley (page 432) says “witnesses to Jesus…or…his witnesses.”

17:6c

And I was utterly amazed at the sight of her.

And I was utterly amazed at the sight of her: The Greek says: “Having seen her, I marveled (with) great wonder.” Other ways to translate these words are:

I was very surprised when I saw her (GW)

This surprising sight amazed me (CEV)

Since 17:6a mentions seeing the woman, it is more natural in some languages not to repeat that here. For example:

I was very amazed

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

ἐκ τοῦ αἵματος τῶν ἁγίων, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ αἵματος τῶν μαρτύρων Ἰησοῦ

with the blood ˱of˲_the holy_‹ones› with the blood ˱of˲_the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί εἶδα τήν γυναῖκα μεθύουσαν ἐκ τοῦ αἵματος τῶν ἁγίων καί ἐκ τοῦ αἵματος τῶν μαρτυρῶν Ἰησοῦ Καί ἐθαύμασα ἰδών αὐτήν θαῦμα μέγα)

These two phrases mean similar things. John is using repetition to emphasize the idea that the phrases express. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them. Alternate translation: [from the blood of the saints who had borne witness to Jesus]

Note 2 topic: writing-poetry

ἐθαύμασα & θαῦμα μέγα

˱I˲_marveled & wonder great

John is using a construction in which a verb and its object come from the same root. You may be able to use the same construction in your language to express the meaning here. Alternatively, your language may have its own way of expressing the same meaning. Alternate translation: [I wondered greatly]
