OET (OET-LV)And when he_opened_up the seal the third, I_heard from_the third living_creature saying:
Be_coming.
And I_looked, and see, a_horse black, and the one sitting on it, having a_scale in the hand of_him.

OET (OET-RV)Then the lamb broke the third seal and I heard the third living creature say, “Come.” I looked, and wow, there was a black horse, and the one sitting on it held balancing scales in his hand.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:1–17: The Lamb opened the first six seals

In this section, Jesus, the Lamb, opened six of the seven seals on the scroll. The opening of each of the first four seals revealed a rider and a horse who would cause a different kind of trouble for people on the earth. The opening of the fifth seal revealed all the people who had been killed because of their faith. The opening of the sixth seal caused the whole universe to be shaken and moved.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The Seals (NIV)

The first six seals are opened

And when the Lamb opened the third seal,

the one after the other two

the one after the two of them

6:5b

I heard the third living creature say, “Come!”

say, “Come!”: There is a textual issue in 6:5b: (1) Some early Greek manuscripts have the word come (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some early Greek manuscripts have the words Come and see (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT recommends it. The third living creature spoke here to the rider on the black horse (6:5d). It is probably implied that he spoke loudly, like the first creature spoke (6:1c).

6:5c

Then I looked and saw a black horse,

I looked and saw: The Greek words are literally “I saw, and look,” as in 6:2a. Translate the Greek words as you did in 6:2.

6:5d

and its rider held in his hand a pair of scales.

6:5c–d

a black horse, and its rider held in his hand a pair of scales: The Greek words are literally “a black horse and one sitting on it having a pair of scales in his hand.” It indicates that John saw both the horse and the person sitting on it at the same time but described the horse first. These words are similar in grammar to the words about the white horse and rider in 6:2a. Other ways to translate these words are:

was a black horse and rider with a pair of scales in his hand

was someone on a black horse, holding scales in his hand

a pair of scales: This phrase refers to a balance scale used for weighing things. It had two bowls which hung from a beam. The beam hung from a hook or ring halfway between the bowls. When the weight of the items in the two bowls were equal, the beam was level.

Usually a standard weight was put in one bowl. The person filled the other bowl with portions of the item for sale until the beam was level. They then had measured out the correct amount of the item to sell. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

a scale (GW)

a balance scale (CEV)

a device/tool for measuring the weight of food

a weight measurer

ζυγὸν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὅτε ἤνοιξεν τήν σφραγῖδα τήν τρίτην ἤκουσα τοῦ τρίτου ζῴου λέγοντος Ἔρχου Καί εἶδον καί ἰδού ἵππος μέλας καί ὁ καθήμενος ἐπʼ αὐτόν ἔχων ζυγόν ἐν τῇ χειρί αὐτοῦ)

The word balance describes an instrument for determining the weight of an object or comparing the weight of two objects. It consists of a central post with a crossbar from which two pans are hung. An object may be placed in one pan and known weights placed in the other pan until the crossbar remains level, meaning that both pans contain an equal weight. Or one object may be placed in one pan and a different object in the other pan; the pan that hangs lower contains the heavier object. Since John is describing what he saw, it would be appropriate to use the name or a description of the ancient tool rather than use the name of a modern device for weighing things. Alternate translation: [a balancing scale] or [a weighing instrument]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
