OET (OET-LV)And the heaven was_separating like a_scroll being_rolled_up, and every mountain and island out_of the places of_them were_moved.

OET (OET-RV)The sky was split apart like a scroll being rolled up, and all the mountains and islands were moved out of their places.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:1–17: The Lamb opened the first six seals

In this section, Jesus, the Lamb, opened six of the seven seals on the scroll. The opening of each of the first four seals revealed a rider and a horse who would cause a different kind of trouble for people on the earth. The opening of the fifth seal revealed all the people who had been killed because of their faith. The opening of the sixth seal caused the whole universe to be shaken and moved.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The Lamb opened six of the seven seals

The Seals (NIV)

The first six seals are opened

6:14a

The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up,

receded like a scroll being rolled up: The Greek words are literally “split apart, like a scroll rolling up.”BDAG (page 125) says that the Greek word apochōrizō means “separate” and translates it “was split” for this verse. Louw and Nida have two senses: “separate definitely” and “move away,” but they use this verse alone to justify “move away.” This would be like an opened scroll splitting in the middle and the two ends rolling themselves up away from each other. For example:

The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up (NASB)

The sky was split apart like a scroll being rolled up (NET)

the sky split-in-two and rolled-up like a rolled-up paper which is opened-up and divided-in-two and rolls-up againKankanaey Back Translation on TW.

The sky was rolled up like a scroll (NLT)

a scroll: A scroll was a long piece of paper or parchment used for writing a long document. A person unrolled it to read it and then rolled it up to put it away. The paper or parchment was normally rolled up, so it would often roll up by itself if a person did not hold it open.

In some languages people are not familiar with scrolls. If that is true in your language, you may want to use something similar in shape to a scroll. For example:

paper

a mat

being rolled up: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. Since this is a figure of speech, it is not important who rolled up the scroll.

In some languages an active clause must be used. For example:

that someone rolls up

6:14b

and every mountain and island was moved from its place.

every mountain and island was moved from its place: The Greek word that the BSB translates as moved can also mean “removed” or “shaken.” It is not clear if this verse corresponds to 16:20 (“fled” and “no mountain could be found”) or not.The scholars also have mixed opinions. Aune has “shaken,” Osbourne has “removed,” and Smalley has “moved.” Beale translates as “moved,” but says it is connected to “fled” in 16:20. Other ways to translate this are:

every mountain and island was dislodged from its place (REB)

every mountain and island was removed from its place (NIV, ESV)

all the mountains and islands were shaken from their places (NJB)

every mountain and island was moved: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. God caused the earthquakes that moved the mountains and islands, or he commanded someone to move them. For example:

earthquakes moved every mountain and island

God caused every mountain and island to move from their place

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὁ οὐρανὸς ἀπεχωρίσθη ὡς βιβλίον ἑλισσόμενον

¬the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὁ οὐρανός ἀπεχωρίσθη ὡς βιβλίον ἑλισσόμενον καί παν ὄρος καί νῆσος ἐκ τῶν τόπων αὐτῶν ἐκινήθησαν)

If your language does not use these passive forms, you could express the ideas in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [the sky rolled up as a scroll does when it splits]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ὁ οὐρανὸς ἀπεχωρίσθη ὡς βιβλίον ἑλισσόμενον

¬the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὁ οὐρανός ἀπεχωρίσθη ὡς βιβλίον ἑλισσόμενον καί παν ὄρος καί νῆσος ἐκ τῶν τόπων αὐτῶν ἐκινήθησαν)

The point of this comparison is that the sky went away, just as a scroll would roll away to the two sides of a surface if it split while someone had it spread out on that surface. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [the sky rolled away and disappeared, just as a scroll rolls up in two pieces if it splits]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐκ τῶν τόπων αὐτῶν ἐκινήθησαν

out_of the places ˱of˲_them ˓were˒_moved

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [moved from their places]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐκ τῶν τόπων αὐτῶν ἐκινήθησαν

out_of the places ˱of˲_them ˓were˒_moved

The implication is that the mountains and islands disappeared when they were removed from their places. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [moved from their places and disappeared]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:1–16:21 Three sets of seven judgments—the seals, trumpets, and bowls—form the core of Revelation. Some suggest that the judgments form a chronological sequence from beginning to end, with each set of judgments flowing from the seventh judgment of the previous set for a total of twenty-one successive judgments. More likely, the relationship is cyclical (as in other Jewish apocalyptic works; cp. Dan 2, 7, 8, 11), with each set conveying increasing intensity and adding new details of God’s judgment on those who rebel against him. In this perspective, all three cycles end at the same chronological point, with the return of Christ.
