SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 16:1–24: Paul greeted the believers in Rome

In this section, Paul told the believers to welcome Phoebe when she arrived in Rome and to help her. It is likely that Phoebe carried this letter to Rome.

Then Paul greeted a number of believers whom he had already met. He often used an encouraging description of the person he was greeting.

Then he encouraged the believers in Rome to welcome one another. He warned them to watch out for people who cause divisions or create problems among the believers. He told them to avoid such people. He reminded them that such people only do things for their own selfish interests. He reminded the believers in Rome that people in many places know that the believers obey God well. He encouraged them by saying that God would soon defeat Satan. He blessed them with the grace of Jesus.

He relayed greetings to them from people who were there with him.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Final Instructions and Greetings (ESV)

He greeted them and instructed them one last time

Paul greeted the believers there

16:5a

Greet also the church that meets at their house.

Greet also the church that meets at their house: Here the word church refers to the group of believers that met in the house of Prisca and Aquila. It is implied that this group met every week to worship God. It is not known if they met more than once a week. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

Also greet the believers who meet in their house

announce my greeting to all the believers in the Lord Yesus who hold-services in their houseUma Back Translation on TW.

Greet also all of the believers who meet together in their house to worship GodWestern Bukidnon Manobo Back Translation on TW.

Greet: Translate this word as you did in 16:3. This word is used with the same meaning in 16:6–15.

16:5b

Greet my beloved Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia.

my beloved Epenetus: This phrase indicates that Paul loved Epenetus as a Christian brother. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

Epenetus, whom I love

my dear brother in Christ, Epenetus

my dear friend Epenetus (NIV)

who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia: This further describes Epenetus. It does not separate this Epenetus from other men named Epenetus. For the correct meaning in some languages, the word who must be replaced with something else and possibly a new sentence started. For example:

and he was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia

He was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia

the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia: This means that Epenetus was the first person in Asia to leave his previous religious beliefs and believe in Jesus.

the province of Asia: There is a textual issue in 16:5b: (1) Some Greek manuscripts have the word Asia (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NABRE, ESV, REB, NLT, GW, NET, NCV). (2) Some Greek manuscripts have the word Achaia (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1). At that time the name Asia referred to a region in what is now the western part of the country of Turkey. But in English the name now refers to a much larger region very far east of Turkey that includes the country of China.

The BSB adds the phrase the province of to indicate the old meaning. You may also want to explain its meaning in a footnote. Here is an example footnote:

At that time, the name Asia referred to a province under Roman rule that was across the Aegean Sea east of Greece. It was in the western part of what is now the country of Turkey.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

καὶ τὴν κατ’ οἶκον αὐτῶν ἐκκλησίαν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί τήν κατʼ οἶκον αὐτῶν ἐκκλησίαν Ἀσπάσασθε Ἐπαίνετον τόν ἀγαπητόν μού ὅς ἐστίν ἀπαρχή τῆς Ἀσίας εἰς Χριστόν)

This clause continues the sentence that Paul began in [16:3](../16/03.md) and interrupted in the previous verse. If you made the previous verse into its own sentence, then here you will need to add the main verb from [16:3](../16/03.md). Alternate translation: [and greet the church based in their house]

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

οἶκον αὐτῶν

˓the˒_house ˱of˲_them

The pronoun their here refers to Prisca and Aquila. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [the house of Prisca and Aquila]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / imperative

ἀσπάσασθε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί τήν κατʼ οἶκον αὐτῶν ἐκκλησίαν Ἀσπάσασθε Ἐπαίνετον τόν ἀγαπητόν μού ὅς ἐστίν ἀπαρχή τῆς Ἀσίας εἰς Χριστόν)

See how you translated Greet in [16:3](../16/03.md).

Note 4 topic: translate-names

Ἐπαίνετον

Epaenetus

The word Epaenetus is the name of a man.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἀπαρχὴ τῆς Ἀσίας εἰς Χριστόν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί τήν κατʼ οἶκον αὐτῶν ἐκκλησίαν Ἀσπάσασθε Ἐπαίνετον τόν ἀγαπητόν μού ὅς ἐστίν ἀπαρχή τῆς Ἀσίας εἰς Χριστόν)

Paul speaks of Epaenetus as if he were fruit that he had harvested. He means that Epaenetus was the first person in Asia who believed in Christ as a result of Paul’s preaching. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the first person in Asia to believe in Jesus]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

16:5 the church that meets in their home: Early Christians did not have large buildings for their meetings—they met in private homes. The church in Rome was composed of a number of house churches where small groups of believers gathered for worship and instruction.
