Section 16:1–24: Paul greeted the believers in Rome

In this section, Paul told the believers to welcome Phoebe when she arrived in Rome and to help her. It is likely that Phoebe carried this letter to Rome.

Then Paul greeted a number of believers whom he had already met. He often used an encouraging description of the person he was greeting.

Then he encouraged the believers in Rome to welcome one another. He warned them to watch out for people who cause divisions or create problems among the believers. He told them to avoid such people. He reminded them that such people only do things for their own selfish interests. He reminded the believers in Rome that people in many places know that the believers obey God well. He encouraged them by saying that God would soon defeat Satan. He blessed them with the grace of Jesus.

He relayed greetings to them from people who were there with him.

For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites.

For people like them do not serve our Lord Christ; no, they serve their own appetites.
For that kind of people do not work for our Lord Jesus Christ. Rather, they work only to satisfy the desires of their own bodies.

For: This Greek word introduces an explanation for the command to “avoid them” (16:17c). Some English versions omit this word and leave the connection with 16:17 implicit.

serving: Here this word refers to doing what a leader tells someone to do. These men do not do what the Lord Jesus says to do. Instead they do what their own appetites tell them to do. Here are other ways to translate this word:

By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

They talk really well and flatter others and so deceive the hearts of people who do not suspect others of lying to them.
They speak with fine/fair words, and they praise people and so deceive those who do not expect others to be bad people.

smooth talk: This refers to the speech of someone who talks well and people enjoy listening to him talk. Here it implies talk that easily sways people to believe his bad ideas.

flattery: The Greek word here refers to praising someone for selfish purposes.
