SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 16:25–27: Paul glorified God

In this section, Paul finished his letter by describing how God is able to strengthen the believers in Rome, and the purpose of that strengthening. Lastly, he said that God should have glory, as a praise to him.

In the Greek these verses are all one long sentence. It may be more clear for your readers if you break it up into shorter sentences. There is an example of this in the second meaning lines in the Display. See also the General Comment at the end of 16:27 below.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Paul’s Closing Prayer (CEV)

Doxology (ESV)

Concluding Prayer of Praise (GNT)

16:25a–27

In 16:25–27 there is no main verb. The form of the sentence indicates that Paul was declaring that God should get glory (16:27). The rest of the sentence (16:25–26) describes how God strengthens believers. It is also a reason for declaring that God should have glory (16:27). See the General Comment on 16:25a–27 about how to translate this praise to God which was interrupted by a long description.

16:25a

Now to Him who is able to strengthen you

Now: This introduces Paul’s words of 16:25–27. It does not mean “at the present time.”

to Him: The verb that normally goes before a to-phrase in English does not occur until 16:27: “be glory.” See the General Comment note there.

strengthen: This refers to making the believers in Rome strong in their faith. See how you translated this word in 1:11.

16:25b

by my gospel and by the proclamation of Jesus Christ,

by my gospel: There are two ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as by:

  1. It indicates that the gospel tells us that God strengthens believers. For example:

in accordance with the gospel that I preach (NJB) (RSV, NIV11, GNT, NJB, ESV, NABRE, KJV, NASB, NET, REB)

  2. It indicates that the gospel is the means by which God strengthens believers. For example:

by the Good News that I tell people (NCV) (BSB, NIV, GW, CEV, NCV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because many English versions support it.

Here are other ways to translate this phrase according to interpretation (1):

just as my gospel says

my gospel: This refers to the gospel that Paul preached. It is the gospel (“good news”) about Jesus Christ. This phrase does not imply that Paul preached something different from the other apostles. For example:

the Good News that I tell people (NCV)

and by the proclamation of Jesus Christ: The Greek word that the BSB translates as and can also mean “that is.” The word of can mean that Jesus Christ proclaimed or that someone proclaimed about Jesus Christ. These two interpretation issues relate to each other. Here are the two main options:

  1. That Greek word means that is here and the word of means that someone proclaimed about Jesus Christ. For example:

which is the message about Jesus Christ (CEV) (NIV11, GNT, CEV)

  2. That Greek word means and here and the word of means that Jesus Christ proclaimed. This seems to be the natural way to take the phrase “preaching of,” which many translations use here. (RSV, ESV, KJV, NASB)

Some English versions, like the BSB, have the proclamation of Jesus Christ here (See also NIV, NJB, NABRE, NET, REB). This phrase is similar to “the preaching of Jesus Christ,” but it is not very clear which way to take the of when following proclamation.

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). But if the major language version follows interpretation (2), you may want to follow that.

16:25c

according to the revelation of the mystery concealed for ages past

according to the revelation of the mystery: Here the words according to indicate that “my gospel” and “the proclamation of Jesus Christ” is in agreement with this mystery that has now been revealed. For example:

in keeping with the revelation of the mystery (NIV11)

the revelation of the mystery: The word revelation indicates that what was a mystery has now been understood. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

the mystery…that has now been revealed

the mystery…that God has now revealed

mystery: The Greek word that the BSB translates as mystery refers to truth or knowledge that people have not discovered on their own. Someone else reveals it to them. Here are other ways to translate this word:

secret (NCV)

hidden truth

something that was not made known previously

See how you translated this word in 11:25.

concealed for ages past: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

that God concealed for ages past

ages past: Here the word ages refers to long periods of time. An “age” is often characterized by something. For example: the Bronze Age was the period of time when bronze was the common metal used. The ages here are not named, so just refer to long periods of time, hundreds or even thousands of years. For example:

long, long periods of time

very big groups of years

Your translation should not use number words like “hundreds” or “thousands,” because this word should be allowed to be very general.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

[16:25–27](../16/25.md) are one long sentence. If you divide this sentence into shorter sentences, then you will need to repeat part of [16:27](../16/27.md) in [16:25](../16/25.md), as the UST does.

Note 2 topic: writing-endofstory

δὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τῷ Δέ δυναμένῳ ὑμᾶς στηρίξαι κατά τό εὐαγγέλιον μού καί τό κήρυγμα Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ κατά ἀποκάλυψιν μυστηρίου χρόνοις αἰωνίοις σεσιγημένου)

Now here marks the closing section of the letter. If you have a way of doing this in your language, you could use it here.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῷ & δυναμένῳ ὑμᾶς στηρίξαι

˱to˲_the_‹one› & being_able you_all ˓to˒_strengthen

Here, the one refers to God. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [to God, who is able to establish you]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ὑμᾶς στηρίξαι

you_all ˓to˒_strengthen

Here Paul speaks of God strengthening a person’s faith as if God were establishing that person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [to make your faith strong]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τὸ εὐαγγέλιόν μου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τῷ Δέ δυναμένῳ ὑμᾶς στηρίξαι κατά τό εὐαγγέλιον μού καί τό κήρυγμα Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ κατά ἀποκάλυψιν μυστηρίου χρόνοις αἰωνίοις σεσιγημένου)

Paul is using the possessive form to describe the gospel message that he preached. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [the gospel that I preach]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τὸ κήρυγμα Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τῷ Δέ δυναμένῳ ὑμᾶς στηρίξαι κατά τό εὐαγγέλιον μού καί τό κήρυγμα Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ κατά ἀποκάλυψιν μυστηρίου χρόνοις αἰωνίοις σεσιγημένου)

Paul is using the possessive form to describe the preaching that is about Jesus Christ. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [the preaching about Jesus Christ]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τὸ κήρυγμα & ἀποκάλυψιν μυστηρίου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τῷ Δέ δυναμένῳ ὑμᾶς στηρίξαι κατά τό εὐαγγέλιον μού καί τό κήρυγμα Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ κατά ἀποκάλυψιν μυστηρίου χρόνοις αἰωνίοις σεσιγημένου)

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of preaching, revelation, and mystery, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [what is preached … what is revealed of what is mysterious]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

κατὰ ἀποκάλυψιν μυστηρίου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τῷ Δέ δυναμένῳ ὑμᾶς στηρίξαι κατά τό εὐαγγέλιον μού καί τό κήρυγμα Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ κατά ἀποκάλυψιν μυστηρίου χρόνοις αἰωνίοις σεσιγημένου)

Here, according to indicates that what follows is what Paul’s preaching is based on. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [on the basis of the revelation of the mystery]

Note 9 topic: translate-unknown

μυστηρίου

˱of˲_˓the˒_mystery

Paul uses the word mystery to refer to God’s plan to save people, which was revealed in the gospel. This does not mean that the idea is hard to understand, but rather, that God had not yet revealed it to people. If your language would not use mystery to refer to something that was concealed but has now been revealed, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [of this concealed message]

Note 10 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

κατὰ ἀποκάλυψιν μυστηρίου χρόνοις αἰωνίοις σεσιγημένου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: τῷ Δέ δυναμένῳ ὑμᾶς στηρίξαι κατά τό εὐαγγέλιον μού καί τό κήρυγμα Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ κατά ἀποκάλυψιν μυστηρίου χρόνοις αἰωνίοις σεσιγημένου)

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [according to the mystery that God has now revealed, yet had kept secret for long ages]

Note 11 topic: figures-of-speech / distinguish

χρόνοις αἰωνίοις σεσιγημένου

˱in˲_times ˓the˒_eternal ˓having_been˒_kept_silent

This clause gives further information about the mystery, which is also the gospel. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different way to make this connection clear. Alternate translation: [which is what was kept secret for long ages]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

16:25 plan (literally mystery): For Paul, the mystery is the truth about God and his plan that was not clearly known in the Old Testament era but which has been revealed in the New Testament era. While the Old Testament predicted the conversion of Gentiles, it did not make clear that Gentiles would become equal members of the people of God without becoming proselytes of Judaism.

OET (OET-LV)And to_the one being_able you_all to_strengthen, according_to the good_message of_me, and the proclamation of_Yaʸsous chosen_one/messiah according_to the_revelation of_the_mystery in_times the_eternal having_been_kept_silent,

OET (OET-RV)There’s one who, according to my preaching of the good message and the proclamation of Yeshua Messiah, is able to strengthen you all according to the revelation of the mystery that had been keep silent through the ages.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
