SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 16:25–27: Paul glorified God

In this section, Paul finished his letter by describing how God is able to strengthen the believers in Rome, and the purpose of that strengthening. Lastly, he said that God should have glory, as a praise to him.

In the Greek these verses are all one long sentence. It may be more clear for your readers if you break it up into shorter sentences. There is an example of this in the second meaning lines in the Display. See also the General Comment at the end of 16:27 below.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Paul’s Closing Prayer (CEV)

Doxology (ESV)

Concluding Prayer of Praise (GNT)

16:26a

but now revealed

but now revealed: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

he has now revealed

now: Here this word refers generally to this new period of time where the revelation of Jesus as the Christ/Messiah is known.

revealed: The Greek word here refers to making something visible. God has caused the knowledge that was unknown (16:25c: the mystery) to now be known. Here are other ways to translate this word:

disclosed (ESV)

brought out into the open (GNT)

16:26b

and made known through the writings of the prophets

and: This word connects “now revealed” (16:26a) and “made known” (16:26b).

made known through the writings of the prophets: In some English versions, the phrase through the writings of the prophets is first in the clause to emphasize it. For example:

through the prophetic writings has been made known (ESV)

Some languages must have it in its usual place, as the BSB models.

made known: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

he has made known

through the writings of the prophets: Here the word through introduces how the mystery was made known to the nations. God revealed it in these writings.

the writings of the prophets: This refers to the prophecies that were written in the Hebrew Bible, what many Christians now call the Old Testament. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

the holy writings with its prophecies

the writings/books of God and their prophecies

In some languages a literal translation would not clearly imply the Old Testament. If that is true in your language, you may want to explain in a footnote. Here is an example footnote:

This refers to the prophecies in the Old Testament.

16:26c

by the command of the eternal God,

by the command of the eternal God: The Greek word that the BSB translates as by means both:BDAG κατά 5.a.δ.

  1. that the event of God making the mystery known happened as the command of God said it would.

  2. that the event of God making the mystery known happened because God commanded it to happen.

Some languages may be able to indicate both meanings. But many languages will have to choose to translate one or the other meaning. For example:

as the eternal God commanded (NJB)

because the eternal God commanded it

the eternal God: The word eternal indicates that God always existed in the past and will always exist in the future.

16:26d

in order to lead all nations to the obedience that comes from faith—

in order to lead…to the obedience that comes from faith: The words in order to introduce the purpose of Paul’s gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ (16:25b) being made known (16:26b). The purpose was that the people would obey Jesus because they believe in him. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

for the obedience of faith (KJV)

to the obedience that is associated with faith (GW)

so that…obey in faith (NJB)

in order to: Here the phrase in order to introduce the purpose of God making known the mystery that was “concealed for ages past” (16:25c).

the obedience that comes from faith: See how you translated this phrase in 1:5.

all nations: The singular word “nation” here refers to a group of people united by a common language and culture. It is also sometimes used to refer a group of these groups organized under one government. Use a word that allows both meanings.

Some languages must choose between those two meanings. If that is true in your language, refer to the first kind of group, a group of people united by a common language and culture.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / distinguish

φανερωθέντος δὲ νῦν

˓having_been˒_revealed (Some words not found in SR-GNT: φανερωθέντος δέ νῦν διά τέ Γραφῶν προφητικῶν κατʼ ἐπιταγήν τοῦ αἰωνίου Θεοῦ εἰς ὑπακοήν πίστεως εἰς παντᾶ τά ἔθνη γνωρισθέντος)

This clause gives further information about “the mystery,” which is also the “gospel” mentioned in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different way to make this connection clear. Alternate translation: [but now that mystery has been revealed]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

φανερωθέντος δὲ νῦν

˓having_been˒_revealed (Some words not found in SR-GNT: φανερωθέντος δέ νῦν διά τέ Γραφῶν προφητικῶν κατʼ ἐπιταγήν τοῦ αἰωνίου Θεοῦ εἰς ὑπακοήν πίστεως εἰς παντᾶ τά ἔθνη γνωρισθέντος)

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [but now God has revealed]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

διά τε Γραφῶν προφητικῶν, κατ’ ἐπιταγὴν τοῦ αἰωνίου Θεοῦ εἰς ὑπακοὴν πίστεως, εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔθνη γνωρισθέντος

by (Some words not found in SR-GNT: φανερωθέντος δέ νῦν διά τέ Γραφῶν προφητικῶν κατʼ ἐπιταγήν τοῦ αἰωνίου Θεοῦ εἰς ὑπακοήν πίστεως εἰς παντᾶ τά ἔθνη γνωρισθέντος)

The word translated as and here indicates that the following four phrases are connected to the fifth phrase. If it would be helpful in your language, you could change the order of these phrases. Alternate translation: [and having been made known through the prophetic writings, according to the command of the eternal God, to the obedience of faith, to all the nations]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

Γραφῶν προφητικῶν & ἐπιταγὴν τοῦ αἰωνίου Θεοῦ εἰς ὑπακοὴν πίστεως

˓the˒_Scriptures prophetic & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: φανερωθέντος δέ νῦν διά τέ Γραφῶν προφητικῶν κατʼ ἐπιταγήν τοῦ αἰωνίου Θεοῦ εἰς ὑπακοήν πίστεως εἰς παντᾶ τά ἔθνη γνωρισθέντος)

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of writings, command, obedience, and faith, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [what was written by the prophets … what the eternal God commanded, that we should obey as an act of faith]

Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal

εἰς ὑπακοὴν πίστεως

for to (Some words not found in SR-GNT: φανερωθέντος δέ νῦν διά τέ Γραφῶν προφητικῶν κατʼ ἐπιταγήν τοῦ αἰωνίου Θεοῦ εἰς ὑπακοήν πίστεως εἰς παντᾶ τά ἔθνη γνωρισθέντος)

Here, to indicates that this is a purpose clause. Use a natural way in your language for introducing a purpose clause. Alternate translation: [for the purpose of the obedience of faith]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

ὑπακοὴν πίστεως

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: φανερωθέντος δέ νῦν διά τέ Γραφῶν προφητικῶν κατʼ ἐπιταγήν τοῦ αἰωνίου Θεοῦ εἰς ὑπακοήν πίστεως εἰς παντᾶ τά ἔθνη γνωρισθέντος)

See how you translated this phrase in [1:5](../01/05.md).

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

γνωρισθέντος

˓having_been˒_made_known

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [God having made known]
