OET (OET-LV)Greet Andronikos and Younias, the fellow-citizens of_me and fellow-prisoners of_me, who are notable among the ambassadors, who also before me have_become in chosen_one/messiah.

OET (OET-RV)Greet Andronicus and sister Junia, my fellow citizens and fellow prisoners with me, and who are notable among the ambassadors in Messiah who started before me.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-names

Ἀνδρόνικον

Andronicus

The word Andronicus is the name of a man.

Note 2 topic: translate-names

Ἰουνίαν

Junia

Junias could refer to: (1) a woman named Junia, in which case Andronicus and Junias might be a married couple like Prisca and Aquila. See the UST. (2) the shortened form of Junianus, a man’s name, which is less likely.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τοὺς συγγενεῖς μου

¬the fellow-citizens ˱of˲_me

Here, kinsmen could refer to: (1) Jewish Christians. Alternate translation: “my Jewish Christian kinsmen” (2) Christian relatives of Paul. Alternate translation: “my Christian relatives”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οἵτινές εἰσιν ἐπίσημοι ἐν τοῖς ἀποστόλοις

who are notable among the ambassadors

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “whom the apostles know very well”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / distinguish

οἳ

who

Here, who indicates that what follows is further information about Andronicus and Junias. It is not information about the apostles. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation (as a new sentence): “These two people”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν Χριστῷ

among in Christ

Here, in Christ refers to being united with Christ. See how you translated the same use of this phrase in 3:24.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

16:7 In Greek, the name Junia could refer to a man named Junias or to a woman named Junia. Most interpreters understand Junia as a feminine name. This section pairs masculine and feminine names to refer to husband-and-wife teams, so Junia was probably a woman.
• who were in prison with me: When this occurred is uncertain. According to Acts, Paul had been imprisoned overnight in Philippi (Acts 16:19-28); after Romans was written, he would later be imprisoned for two years in Caesarea (Acts 24:27) and for two years in Rome (Acts 28:30-31). Paul was undoubtedly imprisoned on occasions not mentioned in Acts (see 2 Cor 11:23).
• highly respected among the apostles: This phrase probably indicates that Andronicus and Junia were apostles—i.e., accredited missionaries of the church (see Acts 14:4, 14; 1 Cor 9:5-6; Gal 2:9).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
