Section 16:1–24: Paul greeted the believers in Rome

In this section, Paul told the believers to welcome Phoebe when she arrived in Rome and to help her. It is likely that Phoebe carried this letter to Rome.

Then Paul greeted a number of believers whom he had already met. He often used an encouraging description of the person he was greeting.

Then he encouraged the believers in Rome to welcome one another. He warned them to watch out for people who cause divisions or create problems among the believers. He told them to avoid such people. He reminded them that such people only do things for their own selfish interests. He reminded the believers in Rome that people in many places know that the believers obey God well. He encouraged them by saying that God would soon defeat Satan. He blessed them with the grace of Jesus.

He relayed greetings to them from people who were there with him.

Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord,

Greet Rufus. He is an excellent believer in the Lord.

Rufus: This name refers to a man.

chosen: There are several ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as chosen:

It means excellent here. For example:
outstanding (GNT) (RSV, GNT, NASB, GW, REB, CEV, NCV)
It means chosen here, as in the BSB. (BSB, NIV, ESV, NJB, NABRE, NRSV, KJV, NLT, NET)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). But if the major language version follows interpretation (2), you may want to follow that.

in the Lord: This phrase indicates that Rufus was chosen because of a connection to the Lord. The exact kind of connection in this case is not stated.

16:13b

and his mother, who has been a mother to me as well.

Greet his mother also. She has been like a mother to me.
Give my greetings of respect to his mother. She is like a mother to me.

his mother, who has been a mother to me as well: The word who further describes Rufus’ mother. To make it a description, some languages must avoid the word who. For example:

his mother. She has been a mother to me as well.

who has been a mother to me as well: The Greek is literally “and mine.” It indicates that Rufus’ mother was like a mother to Paul as well. Your translation should indicate or imply that Rufus’ mother was not Paul’s actual mother. Here are other ways to translate this clause:
