OET (OET-LV)For/Because what he_died_off, to_ the _sin died_off once_for_all, but what he_is_living, he_is_living to_ the _god.

OET (OET-RV)When he died, he died to sin once and for all, but now that he lives, he lives to please God.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:1–14: We must live for God because we died to sin

In this section, Paul told the believers in Rome that they should not continue to sin, because baptism symbolizes death to sin. Jesus’ resurrection symbolizes the new life that believers can live in. The believers’ old way of life is crucified on the cross of Jesus so that they have no need to follow the desires to sin. Believers will live new lives for God and death no longer rules them, because Jesus died and was raised for them. Therefore believers should consider themselves dead to sin and do the good deeds that God wants them to do. God’s grace removes believers from the rule of sin in their lives.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Believers are dead to sin, so they must live for God

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ (NIV)

We are no longer slaves to sin, but God’s servants

6:10a

The death He died, He died to sin once for all;

The Greek of 6:10a begins with a word that is usually translated as “For.” It introduces an explanation of what Paul said in 6:9. In some languages, it may be more natural to omit this word, as the BSB does.

The death He died: These words refer to Jesus’ death in particular. Here are other ways to translate these words:

the death that he died

When he died, (NLT)

About his dyingYongkom Back Translation, by this author, unpublished manuscript.

He died to sin: This phrase indicates that sin no longer has power over Jesus. While he lived on the earth sin and death ruled over him just as it does for everyone else (even though he remained sinless). When he died, his death released him from that power and now it can no longer rule over him.

In some languages a literal translation would imply a wrong meaning or may be unclear. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

once for all: Here this phrase means “once and never again.”BDAG (page 417), Louw and Nida (on TW), and Kruse (page 266). The phrase does not mean “once for all people.” Alford (page 439) says it means “not to be repeated.” Jesus died once and will not die again. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

only once ever

once and only once

never to die again

6:10b

but the life He lives, He lives to God.

but: This word indicates that Jesus living to God contrasts to him dying to sin (6:10a). But some languages would not see contrast here. For example:

and (NJB)

the life He lives: These words refer to Jesus’ life in particular. It refers to his life in heaven at this time, not his life on earth long ago. Here are other ways to translate these words:

the life that he lives

now that he lives, (NLT)

about his livingYongkom Back Translation, by this author, unpublished manuscript.

He lives to God: Here the word to indicates that Jesus lives to honor and glorify God, and to do as God wants him to.Stott (page 178), Moo (on TW), and Morris (on TW). Here are other ways to translate this clause:

he lives for God (GW)

he lives for the glory of God (NLT)

his living now/today is so that he will serve GodKankanaey Back Translation on TW.

he is living to do the will of GodOtomi Back Translation on TW.

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅ Γάρ ἀπέθανεν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ἀπέθανεν ἐφάπαξ ὅ δέ ζῇ ζῇ τῷ Θεῷ)

For indicates that what follows is the reason why Christ “no longer dies,” as stated in the previous verse. Use the most natural way in your language for indicating a reason, as in the UST.

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅ Γάρ ἀπέθανεν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ἀπέθανεν ἐφάπαξ ὅ δέ ζῇ ζῇ τῷ Θεῷ)

Here, that which refers to Christ’s death and life. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [the death which]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ἀπέθανεν

¬the ˱to˲_sin died_off

Here, to sin implies that Christ died for the sake of freeing humanity from being “enslaved to sin.” It does not mean that Jesus himself was ever controlled by sin before he died. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [he died for the sake of removing sin’s control over people] or [he died to stop sin from controlling people]

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

ὃ δὲ ζῇ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅ Γάρ ἀπέθανεν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ἀπέθανεν ἐφάπαξ ὅ δέ ζῇ ζῇ τῷ Θεῷ)

Here, what he lives refers to Christ’s life after God raised him from the dead. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [But the life which]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ζῇ τῷ Θεῷ

˱he˲_˓is˒_living (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅ Γάρ ἀπέθανεν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ἀπέθανεν ἐφάπαξ ὅ δέ ζῇ ζῇ τῷ Θεῷ)

Here, to God implies that Christ now lives for the sake of glorifying God. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [he lives for the sake of glorifying God]
