TSNTyndale Study Notes:

17:17 many wives: Polygamy is neither prohibited nor sanctioned here. This guideline was meant to moderate and regulate the practice. In the ancient world, kings married many wives to cement political alliances with other kingdoms, showing trust in human power rather than God’s provision. David (2 Sam 5:13; 12:11) and Solomon (1 Kgs 11:3-4) both ignored this warning to their own great harm and that of the nation.
• must not accumulate: The amassing of wealth was another sign of dependence on human resources.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְלֹ֤א יַרְבֶּה & לֹ֥א יַרְבֶּה\n

and=not acquire_many & not (Some words not found in UHB: and=not acquire_many for=him/it women/wives and=not turn_away heart,his and,silver and,gold not acquire_in_great_quantity for=him/it very )

Here, multiply means “acquire a large number of.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “And he shall not keep acquiring more and more … and he shall not acquire more and more”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְלֹ֥א יָס֖וּר לְבָב֑וֹ

and=not turn_away heart,his

Here, turn aside means to disobey or stop following. Moses is speaking of Yahweh’s commandments as if they were a path that one could walk on and disobedience as turning aside from that way. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “so his heart will not stop following Yahweh”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

וְלֹ֥א יָס֖וּר לְבָב֑וֹ

and=not turn_away heart,his

Here, heart represents a person’s will and desires. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and he will not desire to turn aside”
