UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הִנֵּ֤ה

see/lo/see!

Isaiah is using the term Behold to focus his listeners’ attention on what he is about to say. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation. Alternate translation: [Listen]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

יוֹם־יְהוָה֙ בָּ֔א אַכְזָרִ֥י

day YHWH he/it_came cruel

Isaiah is speaking of the day of Yahweh as if it were a living thing that could be cruel and come on its own. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Yahweh will come and be cruel]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וַחֲר֣וֹן אָ֑ף

and,burning_of anger

Isaiah is using burning of nose as a common expression of the culture to mean “fierce anger.” If this phrase does not have that meaning for your readers, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and fierce anger]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

וְעֶבְרָ֖ה וַחֲר֣וֹן אָ֑ף

and,wrath and,burning_of anger

The terms wrath and burning of nose mean similar things. Isaiah is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [with great wrath]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

לְשַׁמָּ֔ה

(into)_a,waste

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of wrath and desolation, you could express the same ideas in other ways. Alternate translation: [a completely ruined place]
