Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. 7:1-28 Hebrews 7 develops the main topic introduced in 5:1-10: Jesus’ appointment as a high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
ἔτι & ἐν τῇ ὀσφύϊ τοῦ πατρὸς ἦν
still & in the loin ˱of˲_his father ˱he˲_was
Here the author speaks as if Levi was still in the loin of his father. He means that Abraham had not yet fathered any descendants, so in a way they were all still part of Abraham. The author uses this figure of speech to make two points. First, Levi and the priests descended from him had not yet been born and thus could be considered to be inside Abraham. Second, because they were inside Abraham, they participated in whatever Abraham did. This included giving a tithe to Melchizedek. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a phrase that closely identifies Levi and Abraham, while showing that Levi was not yet born. Alternate translation: [he was not yet born, and Abraham represented him]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
τοῦ πατρὸς
˱of˲_his father
Here the author uses the word father to refer in general to a male ancestor. Abraham was more specifically Levi’s great-grandfather on his father’s side. Use an appropriate word for this relationship in your culture. Alternate translation: [of his ancestor]
Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns
αὐτῷ
˱with˲_him
Here, the word him refers to Abraham. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make explicit that the pronoun refers to Abraham. Alternate translation: [Abraham]
