14:11 The reason for thirty . . . companions is not clear (cp. 2 Sam 23:13). Companions, a word that normally means “friends,” may lend a touch of irony here (Judg 14:12-20).

Alternate translation: “when they saw that he had not brought a bridegroom’s party with him” (2) that they did this for their own safety when they saw how strong and powerful Samson was. Alternate translation: “when they saw how strong and powerful he was”
