18:1-31 The migration of the Danites (cp. Josh 19:40-48) is the story of that tribe’s failure to obey God’s covenant, and it is indicative of Israel’s decline. What began as Micah’s private heresy (Judg 17:4-5) would become the apostasy of an entire tribe (18:30-31). What began as covenant failure (1:19-36) turned into social breakdown in the days of Jephthah and Samson (chs 11–16). In the end, law and order were replaced by banditry and pillaging (18:27-28).

In those days
(Some words not found in UHB: in_the=days the=those not king in/on/at/with,Israel and,in/on/at/with,days the=those tribe the,Danites seeking to=him/it territory to,live that/for/because/then/when not allotted for=him/it until the=day (the)=that in_the=middle tribes Yisrael in/on/at/with,territory )
The author is using the term days by association to mean a particular time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “At that time”
Note 2 topic: writing-background
Now in those days
(Some words not found in UHB: in_the=days the=those not king in/on/at/with,Israel and,in/on/at/with,days the=those tribe the,Danites seeking to=him/it territory to,live that/for/because/then/when not allotted for=him/it until the=day (the)=that in_the=middle tribes Yisrael in/on/at/with,territory )
The author is using this phrase to introduce background information that will help readers understand what happens next in the story. In your translation, introduce this information in a way that would be natural in your own language and culture.
Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
the tribe of the Danite {was} seeking for itself an inheritance to dwell, for one had not fallen to it unto that day in the midst of the tribes of Israel for an inheritance
If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: “because the tribe of the Danite had not received an inheritance among the tribes of Israel, it was seeking for itself an inheritance to dwell”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun
the Danite
(Some words not found in UHB: in_the=days the=those not king in/on/at/with,Israel and,in/on/at/with,days the=those tribe the,Danites seeking to=him/it territory to,live that/for/because/then/when not allotted for=him/it until the=day (the)=that in_the=middle tribes Yisrael in/on/at/with,territory )
The author is not referring to a specific Danite. He means the people of the tribe of Dan in general. It may be more natural in your language to express this meaning by using a plural form. Alternate translation: “the Danites”
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
an inheritance to dwell
(Some words not found in UHB: in_the=days the=those not king in/on/at/with,Israel and,in/on/at/with,days the=those tribe the,Danites seeking to=him/it territory to,live that/for/because/then/when not allotted for=him/it until the=day (the)=that in_the=middle tribes Yisrael in/on/at/with,territory )
The author is using the term inheritance by association to mean a lasting possession that would be passed down to future generations. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “a lasting possession of territory in which they could live”
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
one had not fallen to it
(Some words not found in UHB: in_the=days the=those not king in/on/at/with,Israel and,in/on/at/with,days the=those tribe the,Danites seeking to=him/it territory to,live that/for/because/then/when not allotted for=him/it until the=day (the)=that in_the=middle tribes Yisrael in/on/at/with,territory )
The author is using a common expression of his culture to mean that no territory had been assigned to the tribe. The word fallen suggests assignment by lot. In actuality, the Danites had failed to conquer enough of the territory that had been assigned to them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly in light of the historical context. Alternate translation: “they had not secured a sufficient one”
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo
for an inheritance
(Some words not found in UHB: in_the=days the=those not king in/on/at/with,Israel and,in/on/at/with,days the=those tribe the,Danites seeking to=him/it territory to,live that/for/because/then/when not allotted for=him/it until the=day (the)=that in_the=middle tribes Yisrael in/on/at/with,territory )
It might seem that this expression contains extra information that would be unnatural to express in your language. If so, you can leave it out, since the word inheritance already occurs earlier in the verse.
