OET (OET-RV)Manashsheh was allocated cities inside both Yissashkar’s and Asher’s territories: Beyt-Shan, Ibleam, Dor, Endor, Taanach, and Megiddo along with their surrounding towns.[fn]

17:11 We’ve omitted the final Hebrew phrase here (the three of Nafet) since it’s unclear what it means (plus it’s not considered to be a vital point in the narrative).

BrTrAnd Manasses shall have in the portion of Issachar and Aser Bæthsan and their villages, and the inhabitants of Dor, and its villages, and the inhabitants of Mageddo, and its villages, and the third part of Mapheta, and its villages.

ULTAnd to Manasseh in Issachar and in Asher were Beth Shan and its daughters and Ibleam and its daughters and the dwellers of Dor and its daughters and the dwellers of En Dor and its daughters and the dwellers of Taanach and its daughters and the dwellers of Megiddo and its daughters, the three of a height.

USTBut there were cities inside the territory of the tribes of Issachar and Asher that belonged to people from the tribe of Manasseh. So did the towns around these cities. These cities were Beth Shan, Ibleam, Dor, Endor, Taanach, and Megiddo. Those last three cities are in the hilly area around the city of Dor.

BSB  • Within Issachar and Asher Manasseh was assigned Beth-shean Ibleam, Dor (that is, Naphath), Endor Taanach [and] Megiddo, each with their surrounding settlements.

MSB • Within Issachar and Asher Manasseh was assigned Beth-shean Ibleam, Dor (that is, Naphath), Endor Taanach [and] Megiddo, each with their surrounding settlements.

OEBIn Issachar and Asher Manasseh held Beth-shean and its townships, Ibleam and its townships, the people living in Dor and its townships (the three heights of Dor), the people living in En-dor and its townships, the people living in Taanach and its townships, the people living in Megiddo and its townships[fn].

17:11 Heb. uncertain.

WEBBEManasseh had three heights in Issachar, in Asher Beth Shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns.

WMBB (Same as above)

NETWithin Issachar’s and Asher’s territory Manasseh was assigned Beth Shean, Ibleam, the residents of Dor, En Dor, the residents of Taanach, the residents of Megiddo, the three of Napheth, and the towns surrounding all these cities.

LSVAnd in Issachar and in Asher, Manasseh has Beth-Shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of En-Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns—three counties.

FBVThe following towns with their associated villages were allocated to Manasseh but lay within the land of Issachar and Asher: Beth-shan, Ibleam, Dor (on the coast), Endor, Taanach, and Megiddo.[fn]

17:11 The Hebrew at the end of the verse is difficult to understand. It says literally “three of the heights.” One solution is that it is a reference to the third named town, Dor, which is now specifically identified as “the one on the coast,” or Naphath-dor. See 12:23.

T4TBut there are cities inside the area allotted to the tribes of Issachar and Asher. Those cities, along with their surrounding villages, were allotted to people from the tribe of Manasseh. These cities are Beth-Shan, Ibleam, Dor (which is also named Naphoth-Dor,) Endor, Taanach, and Megiddo.

This could mean: (1) that the last three cities mentioned, En Dor, Taanach, and Megiddo, were located on heights. They were all near the city of Dor, and they may have been considered part of the “heights of Dor” mentioned in [11:2](../11/02.md). Alternate translation: [these last three cities being in the heights of Dor] (2) that the author wants readers to recognize that the city he calls Dor was also known as Naphoth Dor. The word translated as a height could be a proper name, Naphoth. Alternate translation: [the third city on this list also being known as Naphoth Dor]

Tribal Allotments of the Promised Land

After the Israelites had conquered portions of the Promised Land and Joshua had grown old, the Lord directed him to divide the rest of the land among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance (Joshua 13-20). The eastern tribes had already been allotted their land under Moses’ leadership (Numbers 32), but they continued to help the other tribes drive out the Canaanites from land west of the Jordan River. The Lord also instructed the Israelites to designate several cities of refuge, where someone could flee for protection from an avenger if they accidentally killed someone (Numbers 35; Joshua 20).
