Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

12:10 genuine affection: Literally brotherly love. Christians are to love each other with the mutual love and commitment that are found within a healthy family.
In this section, Paul taught that believers should use their bodies in ways that are holy and acceptable to God. Our thinking must change so that it follows the will of God and not the thinking of the people of this world.
Paul also taught that believers should not be more proud of themselves than what is right before God. We all have different gifts from the Holy Spirit, and we should use them.
Believers should love in a genuine way, avoid evil deeds, honor others, be full of eagerness to serve the Lord. They should rejoice, be patient, pray, help others, and show hospitality.
Believers should bless the people who persecute them, and live in sympathy and harmony with other believers. They are not to be proud such that they avoid people with no status in society. They are not to think of themselves as wise.
Believers are not to take revenge, but leave that for God to do something about the evil done to them. They are to do things that are honorable and live at peace with others, if they can. They are to bless their enemies by doing good to them.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
The New Life in Christ (NRSV)
Our bodies, thinking, and deeds must be holy and good
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.
Family-love(plur) one another with true friendship.
Love one another as brothers/sisters/siblings as dear friends.
Be devoted to one another: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Be devoted is similar to but different than the Greek word translated as “love” in 12:9a. This Greek word refers to affection and concern as among people in your own family. As brothers and sisters in faith in Jesus, believers should have this kind of family love for each other.
Some languages have a word with the above meaning. For example:
Family-love one another
Many languages do not have a separate word as the Greek does. Some languages will translate this word with a phrase. For example:
Love one another as brothers/sisters/siblings
Many English versions use the word “love” here and explain the kind of love in the next phrase. See next note.
in brotherly love: The Greek refers to affection for someone who is a good friend, often implying affection as among brothers and sisters. Here the word brotherly implies sisters as well.
Outdo yourselves in honoring one another.
Honor each other more than yourselves.
Give each other more honor than you want for yourselves. (NCV)
(NIV:) Honor one another above yourselves: The Greek is more literally “About the honoring of one another, going-first-and-leading-the-way.”The BDAG says this last word in the Greek has as its first sense “to go first and lead the way,” but lists this verse as a third sense, “consider better, esteem more highly,” calling the passage difficult. It is difficult because there is no other clear example of this last meaning in the NT or any Greek literature of that time. There are several ways to interpret the Greek word that means “going-first-and-leading-the-way” here. Here are the main ones:
It means more than here. For example:
honor others more than you do yourself (CEV) (NIV, NJB, CEV, REB, NCV)
It means strive to do more than here. For example:
outdo one another in showing honor (RSV) (BSB, RSV, ESV)
It means allowing others to go first here. For example:
give preference to one another in honor (NASB) (NASB, KJV)
It means be eager here. For example:
be eager to show respect for one another (GNT) (GNT, NET)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the BDAG supports it.However, this author finds the first sense in the BDAG, “to go first and lead the way,” to be best. But few English versions follow that interpretation. For example, the Christian Standard Bible says, “Take the lead in honoring one another,’ and the Darby says, “as to honour, each taking the lead in paying it to the other.” Jewett (page 761) translates this word as “taking the lead in,” in other words, not waiting for others to honor someone. He says that interpretations (1), (2), and (3) are not supported in Greek literature. Witherington (page 293) translates 12:10b as, “go first and lead the way in showing honor to one another.”This author can also find no scholar who supports interpretation (4).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / declarative
τῇ φιλαδελφίᾳ εἰς ἀλλήλους φιλόστοργοι; τῇ τιμῇ ἀλλήλους προηγούμενοι
˱with˲_the brotherly_love toward one_another dearly_devoted_‹be› ¬the ˱in˲_honor one_another preferring
Paul is using statements to give commands. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a more natural form for commands. Alternate translation: [in brotherly love, be affectionate to one another; in honor, outdo one another]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
τῇ φιλαδελφίᾳ & τῇ τιμῇ
˱with˲_the brotherly_love & ¬the ˱in˲_honor
If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of brotherly love and honor, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [in loving others as brothers … in honoring others]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations
τῇ φιλαδελφίᾳ
˱with˲_the brotherly_love
Although the word brotherly is masculine, Paul is using the word here in a generic sense that includes both men and women. Alternate translation: [in your love for fellow believers]
