12:16 All three exhortations in this verse use the Greek word phroneō (think). Paul addresses the need for right Christian thinking when it comes to our relationships with other Christians.
• Live in harmony: Literally Think the same things.
• Don’t be too proud: Literally Don’t think arrogant things.
In this section, Paul taught that believers should use their bodies in ways that are holy and acceptable to God. Our thinking must change so that it follows the will of God and not the thinking of the people of this world.
Paul also taught that believers should not be more proud of themselves than what is right before God. We all have different gifts from the Holy Spirit, and we should use them.
Believers should love in a genuine way, avoid evil deeds, honor others, be full of eagerness to serve the Lord. They should rejoice, be patient, pray, help others, and show hospitality.
Believers should bless the people who persecute them, and live in sympathy and harmony with other believers. They are not to be proud such that they avoid people with no status in society. They are not to think of themselves as wise.
Believers are not to take revenge, but leave that for God to do something about the evil done to them. They are to do things that are honorable and live at peace with others, if they can. They are to bless their enemies by doing good to them.

Live in harmony with one another: The Greek clause is literally “thinking the same thing toward one another.” There are several ways to interpret it. Here are the main ways:
It means to agree in opinion with one another here. It does not mean thinking exactly the same thing, but to have similar opinions on big issues. Differences of opinion on other things do not affect their love for their fellow believers. For example:
Live in agreement with one another (REB)
Be of the same mind toward one another (NASB) (BSB, RSV, NIV, NASB, KJV, ESV, NLT, GW, NET, REB)
It means to be concern for each believer in the same amount here. For example:
Have the same concern for everyone (GNT) (GNT, NJB, NABRE)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because interpretation (2) is not really fitting to the Greek idiom.Cranfield (page 643) calls it “forced.”
Do not be proud,
Do not be arrogant/conceited.
Do not think you are better than others.
Do not be proud: This clause refers to not thinking you are better than other people. Someone of high social status should not think they are a better person than someone of low social status. Someone who has lots of knowledge should not think they are a better person than someone who does not have much knowledge. Here are other ways to translate this clause:
Do not be haughty (ESV)
Don’t be arrogant (GW)
but enjoy the company of the lowly.
But/And be friends with people of low social status.
Be friendly with unimportant people.
but: Some languages would not consider “enjoy the company of the lowly” as contrasting with “do not be proud” (12:16b). If that is true in your language, do not translate this as contrast. For example, the Otomi Back Translation omits this word and the Tagbanwa Back Translation says:

enjoy the company of the lowly: There are two ways to interpret the Greek phrase here:
It means adjust your thinking and have a relationship with people of low social status here. For example:
make friends with those who seem unimportant (NCV) (BSB, REV, NIV, NJB, ESV, NABRE, NASB, KJV, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, REB, NCV)
It means adjust your thinking and accept that you should do deeds of low social status here. For example:
accept humble duties (GNT) (GNT)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because many English versions support it.Cranfield (page 644) supports interpretation (1), as do Moo, Longenecker, Cranfield, Dunn, Schreiner, and Jewett in their translations.
Do not be conceited.
Do not think that you are wise/insightful people.
Do not be thinking, “I am a wise person.”
Do not be conceited: This clause indicates that believers should not think that they are wise people. Here are other ways to translate this clause:
Do not think of yourselves as wise (GNT)
Don’t regard yourselves as being wise people
conceited: This word means “to understand events and know the right action.” See how you translated the word “wise” in 1:14 or the word “wisdom” in 11:33.
