Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

ClVg Nemo enim nostrum sibi vivit, et nemo sibi moritur.[fn]
(Nemo because nostrum sibi vivit, and nemo sibi moritur. )
14.7 Nemo because nostrum sibi vivit. Who because lege frenatur, not/no sibi, but Deo, who legem he_gave, vivit. When/But_if lex not/no esset, sibi quisque viveret. Sibi. But Master, quo yudice damnatur or coronatur; vel, sibi, id it_is to laudem his_own, but of_God. Sicut because magnitudinis his not/no it_is finis, so nostræ laudis not/no will_be finis. Non because when/with mortui fuerimus in hac carne, desinemus laudare God. And after/second this about fidelibus only agit. Vel sibi, id it_is from se yudicandus, but from Master after/second this about bonis and malis accipitur.

Key for above GNTs: yellow:punctuation differs (from our SR-GNT base).
14:7 As the Lord’s servants (14:4), Christians are to look to God for guidance and seek to honor him in all things (14:8). Because we are ultimately accountable to him, our desire should always be to please him, not to live for ourselves.
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
γὰρ
for
For indicates that what follows this word explains what came before it. For here indicates that what follows is the reason why what Paul said in the previous clause is true. Use a natural way in your language for indicating a reason. Alternate translation: [This is due to the fact that]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive
ἡμῶν
˱of˲_us
Here, us refers to Paul and his Christian readers, so us would be inclusive. Your language may require you to mark this form.
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἑαυτῷ & ἑαυτῷ
˱to˲_himself & ˱to˲_himself
Here, for himself means to do something only to benefit oneself. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [for the benefit of himself … for the benefit of himself]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
(Occurrence 2) οὐδεὶς
no_one
Paul is leaving out some of the words that a clause would need in many languages to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from the previous clause, as in the UST.
