OET (OET-LV)saying, we_commanded to_you_all By_a_charge not to_be_teaching in the this name, and see, you_all_have_filled the Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim) with_the teaching of_you_all, and you_all_are_wishing to_bring_upon on us the blood of_ the this _man.

OET (OET-RV)“We officially commanded you all not to be teaching in this name and authority. But see here, now you’ve filled Yerushalem with your teaching, and what’s more, you’re blaming us for the death of that man.”

uW Translation Notes:

παραγγελίᾳ παρηγγείλαμεν ὑμῖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγων Παραγγελίᾳ παρηγγείλαμεν ὑμῖν μή διδάσκειν ἐπί τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ καί ἰδού πεπληρώκατε τήν Ἰερουσαλήμ τῆς διδαχῆς ὑμῶν καί βούλεσθε ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐφʼ ἡμάς τό αἷμα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου)

For emphasis, the high priest is using a construction in which a verb and its object come from the same root. If your language uses the same construction for emphasis, it would be appropriate to use it here in your translation. Other languages may have other ways of conveying this emphasis. Alternate translation: [we commanded you very strictly]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / you

ὑμῖν & πεπληρώκατε & ὑμῶν & βούλεσθε

˱to˲_you_all & ˱you_all˲_˓have˒_filled & ˱of˲_you_all & ˱you_all˲_˓are˒_wishing

In this verse the words you and your refer to the apostles, and so those words are plural.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγων Παραγγελίᾳ παρηγγείλαμεν ὑμῖν μή διδάσκειν ἐπί τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ καί ἰδού πεπληρώκατε τήν Ἰερουσαλήμ τῆς διδαχῆς ὑμῶν καί βούλεσθε ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐφʼ ἡμάς τό αἷμα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου)

The high priest is using the term name to mean the person of Jesus. See how you translated the similar expression in [4:17](../04/17.md). Alternate translation: [about this person Jesus]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἰδοὺ, πεπληρώκατε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγων Παραγγελίᾳ παρηγγείλαμεν ὑμῖν μή διδάσκειν ἐπί τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ καί ἰδού πεπληρώκατε τήν Ἰερουσαλήμ τῆς διδαχῆς ὑμῶν καί βούλεσθε ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐφʼ ἡμάς τό αἷμα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου)

The high priest says behold to get the apostles to focus their attention on what he is about to say. Your language may have a similar expression that you can use here in your translation. Alternate translation: [nevertheless you have filled]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

πεπληρώκατε τὴν Ἰερουσαλὴμ τῆς διδαχῆς ὑμῶν

˱you_all˲_˓have˒_filled (Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγων Παραγγελίᾳ παρηγγείλαμεν ὑμῖν μή διδάσκειν ἐπί τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ καί ἰδού πεπληρώκατε τήν Ἰερουσαλήμ τῆς διδαχῆς ὑμῶν καί βούλεσθε ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐφʼ ἡμάς τό αἷμα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου)

The high priest is speaking of the city of Jerusalem as if it were a container that the apostles had filled with their teaching. Alternate translation: [you have taught people who live in every part of Jerusalem]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

βούλεσθε ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς

˱you_all˲_˓are˒_wishing ˓to˒_bring_upon on (Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγων Παραγγελίᾳ παρηγγείλαμεν ὑμῖν μή διδάσκειν ἐπί τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ καί ἰδού πεπληρώκατε τήν Ἰερουσαλήμ τῆς διδαχῆς ὑμῶν καί βούλεσθε ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐφʼ ἡμάς τό αἷμα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου)

The high priest is speaking as if the apostles wanted to put the blood of Jesus on him and his fellow Jewish leaders. Alternate translation: [you want to make us responsible for]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἡμᾶς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγων Παραγγελίᾳ παρηγγείλαμεν ὑμῖν μή διδάσκειν ἐπί τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ καί ἰδού πεπληρώκατε τήν Ἰερουσαλήμ τῆς διδαχῆς ὑμῶν καί βούλεσθε ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐφʼ ἡμάς τό αἷμα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου)

By us, the high priest means himself and his fellow Jewish leaders, but not the apostles to whom he is speaking, so use the exclusive form of that word in your translation if your language marks that distinction.

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τὸ αἷμα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγων Παραγγελίᾳ παρηγγείλαμεν ὑμῖν μή διδάσκειν ἐπί τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ καί ἰδού πεπληρώκατε τήν Ἰερουσαλήμ τῆς διδαχῆς ὑμῶν καί βούλεσθε ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐφʼ ἡμάς τό αἷμα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου)

The high priest is using the term blood to mean death by association with the way Jesus’ blood was shed when he died. Alternate translation: [the death]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου

¬the ˱of˲_man this

The phrase this man refers to Jesus. Alternate translation: [this man Jesus]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:17-40 The success of the apostles’ ministry again aroused strong opposition (cp. 4:1-3). The wealthy and powerful Sadducees controlled the Temple establishment and had a Temple police force at their disposal. They opposed belief in the resurrection and were determined not to allow the apostles to proclaim their message about the resurrection of Jesus unchallenged. They also sensed that their hold on the Jewish people was loosening, so, filled with jealousy, they attacked the apostles.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
