OET (OET-LV)For/Because before these the days Theudas rose_up, saying himself to_be someone, to_whom was_joined_up of_men a_number of_ about _four_hundred, who was_killed and all as_many_as were_being_persuaded by_him were_dispersed and became to nothing.

OET (OET-RV)A while back, a man called Theudas became prominent, saying that he was someone important. Eventually about four hundred others joined him, but he was killed and those who had followed him were dispersed and it all came to nothing.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

πρὸ & τούτων τῶν ἡμερῶν

before & these ¬the days

Gamaliel is using the term days to refer to a specific time. Alternate translation: “some time ago”

Note 2 topic: translate-names

Θευδᾶς

Theudas

Theudas is the name of a man.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἀνέστη

rose_up

In this context, rose up means that Theudas rebelled against the Roman government. Alternate translation: “rebelled”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

λέγων εἶναί τινα ἑαυτόν

saying to_be someone himself

In this context, the expression somebody means a person of importance. Your language may use this expression in the same way. Or, if it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “saying that he was an important person”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ᾧ προσεκλίθη ἀνδρῶν ἀριθμὸς

˱to˲_whom /was/_joined_up ˱of˲_men /a/_number

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this with an active form. As the General Notes to this chapter suggest, it may be helpful to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: “whom a number of men joined” or, as a new sentence, “A number of men joined him”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὃς ἀνῃρέθη

who /was/_killed

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. It may be helpful to begin another new sentence here. Alternate translation: “whom the Romans killed” or, as a new sentence, “But the Romans killed him”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὅσοι ἐπείθοντο αὐτῷ

as_many_as /were_being/_persuaded ˱by˲_him

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this with an active form. Alternate translation: “as many as he had persuaded”

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

διελύθησαν

/were/_dispersed

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this with an active form. Alternate translation: “dispersed”

καὶ ἐγένοντο εἰς οὐδέν

and and became to nothing

Alternate translation: “and their plans did not succeed”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:17-40 The success of the apostles’ ministry again aroused strong opposition (cp. 4:1-3). The wealthy and powerful Sadducees controlled the Temple establishment and had a Temple police force at their disposal. They opposed belief in the resurrection and were determined not to allow the apostles to proclaim their message about the resurrection of Jesus unchallenged. They also sensed that their hold on the Jewish people was loosening, so, filled with jealousy, they attacked the apostles.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
