OET (OET-RV) The Jews in the other parts of the empire, who had gathered together to fight for their lives had defeated their enemies and killed 75,000 of them. But they too did not take the things that had belonged to their enemies.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

נִקְהֲל֣וּ ׀ וְעָמֹ֣ד עַל־נַפְשָׁ֗ם

assembled and,defend on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in lives,their

Here, standing is a metaphor meaning to defend oneself and to fight back instead of running away from an enemy. See how you translated this in 8:11. Alternate translation: “joined together to fight back against their enemies”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

נִקְהֲל֣וּ ׀ וְעָמֹ֣ד עַל־נַפְשָׁ֗ם

assembled and,defend on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in lives,their

It’s implicit here, and stated explicitly in the next verse, that these other Jews fought their enemies only on the thirteenth day. If it would be helpful in your language, you could say that explicitly here. Alternate translation, add: “on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְנ֨וֹחַ֙ מֵאֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם

and,gained_relief from,enemies,their

Here, resting is a figurative way of saying that they no longer needed to fight against their enemies because they had won the battle. Alternate translation: “they had no more trouble from their enemies”

וְהָרֹג֙ בְּשֹׂ֣נְאֵיהֶ֔ם חֲמִשָּׁ֥ה וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים אָ֑לֶף

and,killed in/on/at/with,hated,them five and=seventy thousand

Alternate translation: “and killed 75,000 of them”

Note 4 topic: translate-numbers

חֲמִשָּׁ֥ה וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים אָ֑לֶף

five and=seventy thousand

Alternate translation: “seventy-five thousand”

לֹ֥א שָֽׁלְח֖וּ אֶת־יָדָֽם

not lay DOM hands,their

Alternate translation: “they did not take the things that belonged to them” or “they did not take the valuable things” or “the did not take their possessions”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:16 75,000 seems like quite a large number. The Old Greek translation has 15,000 and the Targum has 10,107 men. The Hebrew word translated thousands can also indicate an extended family or lineage, so it is possible that 75 extended families were killed.
