OET (OET-LV)and_he/it_said the_king to_ʼEştēr the_queen in/on/at/with_Susa the_citadel they_have_killed the_Jews and_destroyed five hundred(s) man and_DOM the_ten the_sons of_Haman in/on/at/with_rest of_the_provinces the_king what have_they_done and_what petition_your and_granted to/for_you(fs) and_what request_your more and_done.

OET (OET-RV)and he told Queen Esther, “Here in the capital city of Shushan the Jews have killed 500 men, including Haman’s ten sons. In the rest of my empire, they must have killed many more than that! So tell me what else you want and I’ll do it for you. I’ll do whatever you ask, so do tell me.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

הָרְגוּ֩ & וְאַבֵּ֜ד

killed & and,destroyed

These terms mean the same thing and are used together for emphasis. Alternate translation: “killed”

Note 2 topic: translate-numbers

חֲמֵ֧שׁ מֵא֣וֹת אִ֗ישׁ

five hundreds (a)_man

Alternate translation: “five hundred men”

וְאֵת֙

and=DOM

Alternate translation: “including”

Note 3 topic: translate-numbers

עֲשֶׂ֣רֶת בְּנֵֽי

ten sons_of

Alternate translation: “10 sons”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

בִּשְׁאָ֛ר מְדִינ֥וֹת הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מֶ֣ה עָשׂ֑וּ

in/on/at/with,rest provinces the=king what? they_had_acquired

The king is making a statement, but he uses a question form to show that he is very convinced that the Jews must have also killed many people in the other provinces. Alternate translation: “what they must have done in the rest of the king’s provinces” or “they must have killed many more in the rest of the king’s provinces”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

וּמַה־שְּׁאֵֽלָתֵךְ֙ וְיִנָּ֣תֵֽן לָ֔ךְ וּמַה־בַּקָּשָׁתֵ֥ךְ ע֖וֹד וְתֵעָֽשׂ

and,what petition,your and,granted to/for=you(fs) and,what request,your again/more and,done

These two statements mean basically the same thing. Ahasuerus says the same thing twice to show that he is truly disposed to give Esther what she wants. If it would be confusing, you do not need to repeat both phrases in your translation. Alternate translation: “is there anything more that you want? Tell me, and I will do it for you”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְיִנָּ֣תֵֽן לָ֔ךְ & וְתֵעָֽשׂ

and,granted to/for=you(fs) & and,done

You can capture these parallel passive statements with one statement using an active form. You can also say who will do the action. Alternate translation: “I will do it for you”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

שְּׁאֵֽלָתֵךְ֙ & בַּקָּשָׁתֵ֥ךְ

petition,your & request,your

The two abstract nouns petition and request can be expressed with a single phrase using the verb “want.” Alternate translation: “anything more that you want”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:12 If the king had been disturbed by the high numbers, he would not have allowed another day of fighting (9:14-15). It seems more likely that the king was astonished that there were so many people who followed Haman and opposed the new regime directed by Mordecai. He was thinking of the political stability of the empire.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
