OET (OET-LV)and_struck_down the_Yəhūdī in_all enemies_of_their a_blow_of sword and_killing and_destroying and_did in/on/at/with_hated_of_them as_pleased_of_they.

OET (OET-RV)So the Jews took their weapons and fought against all of their enemies and completely destroyed them. They were able to do everything that they wanted to do against their enemies.

uW Translation Notes:

וַיַּכּ֤וּ הַיְּהוּדִים֙ בְּכָל־אֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם מַכַּת־חֶ֥רֶב

and,struck_down the,Jews in=all enemies_of,their striking_of sword

After the information about Mordecai, the story now returns to tell what happened on the appointed day. You could add a phrase to show this. Alternate translation, add: “on the day when they were allowed to defend themselves”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וַיַּכּ֤וּ הַיְּהוּדִים֙ בְּכָל־אֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם מַכַּת־חֶ֥רֶב

and,struck_down the,Jews in=all enemies_of,their striking_of sword

This expression means that the Jews defended themselves against their enemies, even to the point of killing people who attacked them. Alternate translation: “the Jews attacked all of their enemies and killed them with their swords”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

מַכַּת־חֶ֥רֶב

striking_of sword

Swords were not necessarily the only weapons the Jews had and used. The sword is used to represent all of their weaponry. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this more general meaning. Alternate translation: “the Jews took up their weapons and used them against their enemies”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

וְהֶ֖רֶג וְאַבְדָ֑ן

and,killing and,destroying

These two words have the same meaning and are used together for emphasis. Alternate translation: “they destroyed them completely”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וַיַּֽעֲשׂ֥וּ בְשֹׂנְאֵיהֶ֖ם כִּרְצוֹנָֽם

and,did in/on/at/with,hated_of,them as,pleased_of,they

This expression does not mean that the Jews felt pleasure when they killed their enemies. Rather, it means that the Jews were able to defend themselves against their enemies and were not hindered in any way. Alternate translation: “they were able to do everything they wanted to do against their enemies”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

בְשֹׂנְאֵיהֶ֖ם

in/on/at/with,hated_of,them

This is an idiom that describes enemies.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:5 They killed and annihilated their enemies: It was not an attack on defenseless people or a ruthless uncontrolled killing spree, but a victorious self-defense against their attackers. The phrase used here repeats the terminology of Haman’s original decree (3:12).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
