SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:1–19: The Jews killed their enemies

When the chosen day arrived, the Jews organized themselves, fought their enemies, and killed many of them. Then Esther begged the king to allow the Jews in Susa to fight their enemies again on the following day. He agreed. After that the Jews celebrated.

9:17a

This was done on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar,

Adar: See note on 3:7d.

9:17b

and on the fourteenth day they rested,

9:17c

making it a day of feasting and joy.

a day of feasting and joy: It was a day when the Jews held feasts and joyfully celebrated their victory over their enemies.

of,the_month_of Adar

Adar is the name of the twelfth and last month of the Hebrew calendar. See how you translated this in [3:7](../03/07.md), [3:13](../03/13.md), [8:12](../08/12.md), [9:1](../09/01.md), and [9:15](../09/15.md).

Alternate translation: [they devoted the next day, the fourteenth day of the month of Adar, to joyful celebration] or [they feasted joyfully the next day, the fourteenth day of the month of Adar]

Note 3 topic: translate-ordinal

בְּאַרְבָּעָ֤ה עָשָׂר֙ בּ֔וֹ

Alternate translation: [on day 14]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

מִשְׁתֶּ֥ה וְשִׂמְחָֽה

feasting and,joy

This phrase expresses a single idea by using two words connected with “and.” The word rejoicing tells how they celebrated. Alternate translation: [joyful celebration]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

מִשְׁתֶּ֥ה

feasting

This is a figure of speech in which a part of something is used to mean the whole thing. The celebrations must have included more than just eating special meals together, but the story uses those meals to refer to the entire celebrations.
