OET (OET-LV)An_annulment for on_one_hand is_becoming of_going_before the_command, because_of the of_it weak and unprofitable,

OET (OET-RV) In the first case, the commandment is annulled because it’s weak and unprofitable

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

μὲν γὰρ

on_one_hand for

Here, the word For introduces an explanation of what the quote in the previous verse means. The phrase on the one hand signals to the audience that this explanation has two parts. The second part begins with “on the other hand” in 7:19b. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use words that introduce a two-part explanation. If you use the following alternate translation, you will need to make sure that your translation of the phrase “on the other hand” in 7:19b fits with what you choose here. Alternate translation: “First then”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἀθέτησις & γίνεται προαγούσης ἐντολῆς

/an/_annulment & /is/_becoming ˱of˲_going_before /the/_commandment

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of annulment and commandment, you could express the ideas by using verbs such as “annul” and “command.” Alternate translation: “what was formerly commanded is annulled”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

προαγούσης ἐντολῆς

˱of˲_going_before /the/_commandment

Here, the phrase the former commandment identifies what God commanded Moses to tell the people about how the descendants of Levi would serve as priests and what they would do. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “of the former commandment about the Levitical priesthood” or “of the former commandment concerning priests in Moses’ law”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

ἀσθενὲς, καὶ ἀνωφελές

weak and unprofitable

These two terms mean basically the same thing and are used together to emphasize how ineffective the “former commandment” was. If your language does not use repetition to do this, or if you do not have two words for these attributes, you could use one phrase and provide emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: “is very weak” or “cannot accomplish anything”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:18 The old requirement about the priesthood was membership in the family of Aaron (see Exod 28:41-43).
• set aside: See Heb 7:15-17.
• because it was weak and useless: As explained in the verses that follow (7:19-28).
