They had killed many people. So, they wanted to make sure that God forgave them for what they had done wrong. Alternate translation: [so that Yahweh accepts them and removes our sins] (3) that they had taken a census of the soldiers. It is possible that it was customary to pay a ransom to God after taking a census. [to pay in Yahweh’s presence for each of us who was counted]
