This could mean: (1) that the commanders realize that God was the one who kept them alive. Because of that, it was as if God owned their lives. They wanted to ransom their lives from God by paying the gold jewelry. Alternate translation: [to redeem our lives from Yahweh] (2) that commanders know that they had sinned or become unclean. They had killed many people. So, they wanted to make sure that God forgave them for what they had done wrong. Alternate translation: [so that Yahweh accepts them and removes our sins] (3) that they had taken a census of the soldiers. It is possible that it was customary to pay a ransom to God after taking a census. [to pay in Yahweh’s presence for each of us who was counted]
