If it would be more natural in your language, you may want to put the phrase my cup before the phrases the portion of my inheritance and holding my lot. Alternate translation: [my cup. You are the portion of my inheritance, and you are holding my lot] or [you are my cup. You are the portion of my inheritance, and you are holding my lot]

By saying that Yahweh is my cup David could mean: (1) that Yahweh controls his destiny in which case he uses cup to refer to what one drinks and therefore, metaphorically, to what one receives in life. Alternate translation: [and the one who controls my future], or (2) [provision] in which case cup refers to physical provision. Alternate translation: [and the one who gives me great blessings]

Here David is speaking of Yahweh as if he were actually the portion of my inheritance. David is alluding to the inheritance of and distribution of land. (See the Introduction to this psalm for more information.) He means that Yahweh is his most valuable possession and the source of all his blessings and sustenance. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [my most precious possession, my source of blessing]

Here David is speaking as if God were literally holding his lot, as if his destiny were a physical object that could be grasped in someone’s hand. He means that God controls and secures his future. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [You are maintaining my lot] or [You are maintaining my destiny]
