uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-poetry

General Information:

(Some words not found in UHB: in/on/at/with,you YHWH taken_refuge not put_to_shame to,forever )

General Information:

This psalm is a prayer for help. Parallelism is common in Hebrew poetry. (See also: figs-parallelism)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

In you, Yahweh, I take refuge

(Some words not found in UHB: in/on/at/with,you YHWH taken_refuge not put_to_shame to,forever )

Going to Yahweh for protection is spoken of as taking refuge in him. Alternate translation: “go to you, Yahweh, for protection”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

let me never be put to shame

(Some words not found in UHB: in/on/at/with,you YHWH taken_refuge not put_to_shame to,forever )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. See how “do not let me be humiliated” is translated in Psalms 25:2. Alternate translation: “never let my enemies put me to shame”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / exclamations

אַ֤ךְ

(Some words not found in UHB: in/on/at/with,you YHWH taken_refuge not put_to_shame to,forever )

The author is using the word surely to emphasize what he says next. Use a natural form in your language to express this emphasis.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

Ps 71 This untitled lament by an aging believer is more of a confession of confidence and hope than the cry of someone abandoned by God. The psalmist experienced God’s power and protection in his youth (71:5-8) and now prays for rescue from the adversaries who stalk him in his old age (71:9-13). Even in the midst of his peril, he continues to tell of God’s past faithfulness and looks forward with hope to a time when he can testify to the next generation that God is faithful and righteous.
