uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-poetry

General Information:

(Some words not found in UHB: not to/for=us YHWH not to/for=us that/for/because/then/when to,name_of,your give glory on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in steadfast_love_of,your on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in faithfulness_of,your )

General Information:

Parallelism is common in Hebrew poetry. (See also: figs-parallelism)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

Not to us, Yahweh, not to us

(Some words not found in UHB: not to/for=us YHWH not to/for=us that/for/because/then/when to,name_of,your give glory on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in steadfast_love_of,your on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in faithfulness_of,your )

The writer repeats the phrase “Not to us” in order to emphasize that they are not worthy to receive the honor that is due only to Yahweh. If necessary, a verbal phrase may be supplied here. Alternate translation: “Do not bring honor to us, Yahweh” (See also: figs-ellipsis)

to us

(Some words not found in UHB: not to/for=us YHWH not to/for=us that/for/because/then/when to,name_of,your give glory on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in steadfast_love_of,your on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in faithfulness_of,your )

The word “us” refers to the people of Israel.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

but to your name bring honor

(Some words not found in UHB: not to/for=us YHWH not to/for=us that/for/because/then/when to,name_of,your give glory on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in steadfast_love_of,your on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in faithfulness_of,your )

Here the word “name” represents Yahweh, himself. Alternate translation: “but bring honor to yourself”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

for your covenant faithfulness and for your trustworthiness

(Some words not found in UHB: not to/for=us YHWH not to/for=us that/for/because/then/when to,name_of,your give glory on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in steadfast_love_of,your on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in faithfulness_of,your )

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word faithfulness, you could express the same idea with an adjective. If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word trustworthiness, you could express the same idea with a verbal phrase. Alternate translation: “because you are faithful to your covenant and you are worthy of people trusting you”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

Ps 115 In this hymn of thanksgiving for God’s blessings, the community ascribes all glory to the name of the Lord, who is the true source of hope and blessing. Meanwhile, those who trust in idols are greatly disappointed. The blessing of the Creator of heaven and earth extends to future generations (115:14), and especially to the priesthood (115:12).
