OET (OET-RV)Then another messenger came out from the temple in heaven, also holding a sharp sickle.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 14:14–20: The person on the cloud harvested the earth

In this section, John saw one “like a son of man” seated on a white cloud. This person gathered the people of the earth just as someone harvests grain. Then an angel gathered the grapes of the earth, and squeezed the juice out. The juice represents God’s anger.

Other examples for this section heading are:

The harvest of the earth

The Earth Is Harvested (NCV)

The person on a cloud gathered the people of the earth

14:17a

Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven,

14:17a–b

This sentence continues using the metaphor of harvesting with a sickle. However, the metaphor changes in 14:18–19.

14:17b

and he too had a sharp sickle.

sickle: This word is the same Greek word as in 14:16a. Usually a much smaller curved knife was used to harvest grapes. But 14:19a indicates that the action here was the same as for the grain harvest in 14:16a. Use the same word or phrase for sickle as you did in 14:16.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:14-20 Two brief scenes portray God’s judgment.
