OET (OET-LV)and in the mouth of_them not was_found a_falsehood, because/for blameless they_are.

OET (OET-RV)and they tell no lies because they are innocent.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 14:1–5: The 144,000 men/believers sang a new song

In this section, John saw Jesus with 144,000 men (this group may represent all believers) who dedicated their whole lives to following him. John heard them sing a new song.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

John saw the Lamb with 144,000 men/believers

The one hundred and forty-four thousand men/people who followed the Lamb completely sing a new song

14:5a

And no lie was found in their mouths;

And no lie was found in their mouths: This is a Hebrew idiom that means “They did not tell lies.” For example:

They never tell lies (CEV)

14:5b

they are blameless.

There is no conjunction between 14:5a and 14:5b. Here this grammar probably indicates that 14:5b is a more general statement than 14:5a but with a similar meaning. The repetition emphasizes the shared meaning. Some languages use other words to emphasize the meaning. For example:

indeed,…

for certain…

they are blameless: There is a textual issue in 14:5b: (1) Some early Greek manuscripts have the text they are blameless (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) A few late Greek manuscripts have the text they are blameless before the throne of God (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. This clause indicates that the behavior of the 144,000 was without fault. Other ways to translate this word are:

without fault (KJV)

they do not have any sin

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν οὐχ εὑρέθη ψεῦδος

in the mouth ˱of˲_them not ˓was˒_found ˓a˒_falsehood

Since John is referring to a group of people, it might be more natural in your language to use the plural form of mouth. Alternate translation: [no lie has been found in their mouths]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν οὐχ εὑρέθη ψεῦδος

in the mouth ˱of˲_them not ˓was˒_found ˓a˒_falsehood

Here the expression has been found means “could be found” or “was there.” Alternate translation: [there was no lie in their mouths]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν οὐχ εὑρέθη ψεῦδος

in the mouth ˱of˲_them not ˓was˒_found ˓a˒_falsehood

John is referring to people speaking by association with the way that a person speaks with his mouth. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [they have told no lies]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν οὐχ εὑρέθη ψεῦδος

in the mouth ˱of˲_them not ˓was˒_found ˓a˒_falsehood

If it would be clearer in your language, you could use a positive expression to translate this double negative that consists of the negative particle no and the negative word lies. Alternate translation: [they have always told the truth]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν οὐχ εὑρέθη ψεῦδος

in the mouth ˱of˲_them not ˓was˒_found ˓a˒_falsehood

The implication is that these people have told no lie about who Jesus is, despite the pressure they have been facing to deny that he is Lord and Savior. You can provide this information in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [they have always told the truth about who Jesus is]

Note 6 topic: translate-textvariants

ἄμωμοί γὰρ εἰσιν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν οὐχ εὑρέθη ψεῦδος ἄμωμοι γάρ εἰσίν)

Some ancient manuscripts read for they are blameless. ULT follows that reading. Other ancient manuscripts add “before the throne of God.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of ULT.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1-5 The true Lamb and his followers starkly contrast with the evil trinity.
