Section 16:1–21: The angels poured the seven bowls

In this section, each of the seven angels in turn poured God’s wrath from his bowl. Each angel caused a different plague to happen on the earth. The people of the earth suffered greatly from the plagues, but they refused to repent.

16:11a

and curse the God of heaven for their pains and sores;

curse: The Greek word that the BSB translates as curse can also mean “blaspheme.” It is the same word as in 16:9. Translate this word as you did there.

the God of heaven: This phrase means “the God who lives/rules in heaven.” For example:

the God who rules in heaven (CEV)

pains: This is the same Greek word that the BSB translates as “anguish” in 16:10c. Here it refers generally to all the suffering that the plagues caused.

sores: This word refers to open wounds or ulcers coming through the skin. Translate this word as you did in 16:2.

16:11b

yet they did not repent of their deeds.

yet: The Greek connects 16:11b to 16:11a with the common conjunction that is often translated as “and.” People in some languages will see no contrast here between cursing God and refusing to repent. For example:

their deeds: Here this phrase refers to the evil deeds that they had done. For example:
