OET (OET-LV)And I_saw out_of the mouth of_the dragon, and out_of the mouth of_the wild_animal, and out_of of_the mouth of_the false_prophet, three spirits unclean as_if frogs,

OET (OET-RV)I saw three evil spirits like frogs come out from the dinosaur’s mouth and out from the sea creature’s mouth and out from the false prophet’s mouth,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 16:1–21: The angels poured the seven bowls

In this section, each of the seven angels in turn poured God’s wrath from his bowl. Each angel caused a different plague to happen on the earth. The people of the earth suffered greatly from the plagues, but they refused to repent.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The seven angels poured God’s wrath from seven bowls

The seven bowls of God’s anger

16:13a

And I saw three unclean spirits that looked like frogs

unclean spirits: The BSB literally represents the Greek in this phrase. The phrase unclean spirits is a Hebrew idiom. It refers to spirits who are religiously unclean. They are impure and, therefore, unable to stand before God.

In some languages a literal translation of the phrase unclean spirits would have the correct meaning. For example:

foul spirits (RSV)

filthy spirits

But in some languages a literal translation would not have the correct meaning. If that is true in your language, you may want to follow the BSB and then explain it in a footnote. An example footnote is:

Literally: “unclean spirits.” The phrase “unclean spirits” is a Hebrew idiom that refers to these spirit being impure, that is, sinful. Sinful spirits are religiously unclean and therefore unable to stand before God.

spirits: The word spirits refers to beings that people usually cannot see. Angels and demons are spirits.

frogs: The word frogs refers to small four-legged amphibians. They begin their lives in the water and then later live on land. They breathe air and eat insects.

16:13b

coming out of the mouths of the dragon,

dragon: This word refers to a mythical creature something like a huge lizard. See how you translated this word in 12:3 or 13:11.

16:13c

the beast, and the false prophet.

false prophet: The second beast (13:11–17) is described here as the false prophet. A true prophet is a person who speaks the message that God gives to him. But a false prophet is one who speaks a message that does not come from God. Other ways to translate this are:

deceitful/lying prophet

he who says he is a prophet but teaches lies

spokesman for Satan

false prophecy say-er

See also how you translated the word prophet in 2:20 (“prophetess”) or 11:18.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ὡς βάτραχοι

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί εἶδον ἐκ τοῦ στόματος τοῦ δράκοντος καί ἐκ τοῦ στόματος τοῦ θηρίου καί ἐκ τοῦ στόματος τοῦ ψευδοπροφήτου πνεύματα τρία ἀκάθαρτα ὡσεί βατράχους)

John does not seem to be drawing a comparison between these unclean spirits and frogs in order to indicate something about the character of the spirits. Rather, he seems to be describing the appearance of the spirits. This appearance may have some symbolic significance, but that is a matter of interpretation rather than translation. Alternate translation: [that looked like frogs]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
