Section 16:1–21: The angels poured the seven bowls

In this section, each of the seven angels in turn poured God’s wrath from his bowl. Each angel caused a different plague to happen on the earth. The people of the earth suffered greatly from the plagues, but they refused to repent.

All the islands disappeared into the sea,
Every island in the sea sank,

Then every island fled: This clause indicates in a poetic way that the islands sank into the sea. The earthquake caused them to sink. For example:

All the islands disappeared. (GNT)

and no mountain could be found.

and the mountains disappeared as well.
and no one could see mountains because they were flattened.

and no mountain could be found: This clause indicates that the earthquake caused the mountains to crumble and fall down. The reason that no mountain could be found was because they were not there any longer. This is a passive clause. Some languages must use an active or intransitive clause. For example:

no one could find the mountains

the mountains disappeared (NJB)

all the mountains vanished (GNT)

John is speaking of each island as if it were a living thing that fled. He means that the islands disappeared beneath the surface of the ocean. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [sank into the ocean]

ὄρη οὐχ εὑρέθησαν
