OET (OET-LV)And I_heard of_the altar saying:
Yes, master the god the almighty, true and righteous are the judgements of_you.

OET (OET-RV)Then I heard (someone at?) the altar say, “Yes, Yahweh God, ruler of all, you judge people with truth and fairness.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 16:1–21: The angels poured the seven bowls

In this section, each of the seven angels in turn poured God’s wrath from his bowl. Each angel caused a different plague to happen on the earth. The people of the earth suffered greatly from the plagues, but they refused to repent.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The seven angels poured God’s wrath from seven bowls

The seven bowls of God’s anger

16:7a

And I heard the altar reply:

(GNT:) Then I heard a voice from the altar saying There is a textual issue in 16:7a: (1) Early Greek manuscripts have the text the altar saying (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) A few later Greek manuscripts have the text another out of the altar saying (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. The Greek phrase is literally “of the altar saying.” There are two ways to interpret this clause:

  1. It indirectly indicates that someone at or near the altar spoke. For example:

a voice from the altar saying (GNT) (GNT, NLT, REB, NCV, KJV)

  2. It indicates that the altar itself spoke. For example:

the altar itself say (NJB) (BSB, RSV, NIV, NJB, NASB, NABRE, GW, CEV, NET, ESV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the literal Greek phrase “of the altar” probably refers to someone at the altar.Aune (page 888) says this means “[someone] from the altar.”

altar: On earth, an altar is a platform on which people offer sacrifices or gifts to God. This altar is similar to the sacrificing altar in front of the Jewish temple. But this altar is in heaven in John’s vision. See how you translated this word in 6:9.

16:7b

“Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are Your judgments.”

Yes, Lord God Almighty: The phrase Lord God Almighty is a direct address. In some languages it is more natural to have the direct address first. For example:

Lord God Almighty, yes

Yes: Here the word Yes indicates that the speaker agrees with what the angel said (16:5b–6b).

Lord: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Lord means “the one who has authority over (others),” or “owner.” God is ruler over all things. See how you translated this word in 4:8 or 15:3.

Almighty: This word is a title meaning “the one with the power to do anything.” For example:

the All-Powerful (NET)

See how you translated this word in 1:8 or 15:3.

true and just are Your judgments: The BSB and other English versions have changed the order of the words in this clause. In Greek and in English doing this emphasizes the phrase true and just here.

In some languages it is more natural to use the normal order of the words. For example:

your judgments are true and just

true: Here the word true indicates that God’s judgments do not have any deceit or lie in them.

just: Here the word just refers to judging correctly. Other ways to translate this word are:

right

proper

judgments: This word refers to God’s decision to punish the people who killed the saints and prophets. See how you translated this word in 16:5.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

ἤκουσα τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου λέγοντος

˱I˲_heard ˱of˲_the altar saying

John is describing the altar as a living thing that can speak. As the General Introduction to Revelation discusses, within the world of this vision, this is not a figure of speech and so you can translate it literally even if your language does not use figures of speech.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

ἀληθιναὶ καὶ δίκαιαι

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἤκουσα τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου λέγοντος Ναί Κύριε ὁ Θεός ὁ Παντοκράτωρ ἀληθιναί καί δίκαιαι αἱ κρίσεις σοῦ)

The terms true and righteous mean similar things. The altar is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [entirely righteous]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

16:7 I heard a voice from the altar: The antiphonal response to the angel’s proclamation (16:5-6) affirms God’s authority and justice. This doxology in the midst of judgment reminds persecuted Christians that God truly cares about his suffering servants and fulfills his own purpose in everything.
