SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 22:6–21: Conclusion

This is the last division of the book of Revelation and the last section. In it, the angel, Jesus, John, and the Holy Spirit spoke some final messages.

The angel of 21:9–22:5 affirmed that the book of Revelation is true. Then Jesus reminded the readers that he will return to earth. He also encouraged the readers to believe what was in this book. Then the angel told John to make this message known to other believers.

Then Jesus again spoke words of encouragement to believers. The Holy Spirit and the church invited all people to come to Jesus and believe in him. Then John warned everyone not to add any words to this book or remove any part of it. Jesus again reminded the readers that he will return. John agreed and ended the book with a blessing on God’s people.

Other examples of headings are:

Ending messages/announcements to endorse/approve the book

Final words to encourage the readers

Jesus, the angel, the Holy Spirit, and John conclude the book

22:21

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen.

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints: There is a textual issue in 22:21: Some early Greek manuscripts have the text the Lord Jesus (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the text our Lord Jesus Christ (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT recommends it. There is a textual issue here about the phrase all the saints:

  1. Some Greek manuscripts say all. For example:

everyone (GNT) (GNT, NJB, NASB, NABRE, GW, CEV, NET, REB, ESV, NCV, KJV)

  2. Some Greek manuscripts say all the saints. For example:

all the saints (RSV) (BSB, RSV)

  3. Some Greek manuscripts say the saints. For example:

God’s holy people (NLT) (NIV, NLT)

It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it, saying that option is nearly certain.

The whole clause is a blessing of farewell. John blessed his readers by expressing his desire that God would give grace to them.

Other ways to translate the whole clause are:

May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with everyone (GNT)

May the Lord Jesus bless all of you with his grace

May all of you have the grace/favor of our Lord Jesus

grace: Here this word refers to God being kind to those who do not deserve his kindness. God is kind to people because he wants to be kind and not because they earned his kindness. John wanted God to show grace to his readers. Other ways to translate this word are:

kind (CEV)

help

favor

In some languages, it is necessary to translate grace using a verb. For example:

voluntarily/graciously be kind

help as a gift/favor

Amen: There is a textual issue here:

  1. Some Greek manuscripts do not have the word. (GNT, NABRE, NLT, CEV, NET, REB)

  2. Some Greek manuscripts have the word. For example:

Amen (RSV) (BSB, RSV, NIV, NJB, NASB, GW, NCV, ESV, KJV)

It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. But if the major language version follows option (2), you may want to follow that.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-blessing

ἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ μετὰ τῶν ἁγίων

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ μετά τῶν ἁγίων Ἀμήν)

John is ending the book of Revelation by asking God to bless the saints, that is, the people who belong to God. In your translation, use a form that speakers of your language would recognize as a blessing. Alternate translation: [May the Lord Jesus bless all of you who belong to God by giving you his grace]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ μετὰ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ μετά τῶν ἁγίων Ἀμήν)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of grace, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [May the Lord Jesus be gracious to]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

22:21 Revelation closes with a benediction similar to those in Paul’s letters (e.g., Rom 15:33; 1 Cor 16:23-24).
• The fitting final sentence invokes the grace of the Lord Jesus, the foundation of our forgiveness and the basis of our eternal hope.
